Some ideas for dynamic speech and language assessment for partially speaking kiddies, based on their special interests with supported communication (for all of them, it was first experience with AAC) during child-led activity:

1) 3D ballerina - naming actions, body parts, concepts, tracing, cutting and glueing, phrases, etc.
Modelled words: more, different, get, put,in, on, open, open+here, help.

2) 3D ballerina final product. I mean, isn't she lovely 😍 thankzzzz for the 📸 💟

3) Play Doh hot dogs and pizza!!!! - shared attention, focus span, cooperative play, imaginative play, naming actions, shapes, etc. We used colouring mat with vehicles to stick PlayDoh shapes on, under, between 😉
Modelled words: this, that, me, you, different, help, get, open, more, no.

4) Mini-objects travelling (duck and her frendo zebra) on the PlayDoh roads with PlayDoh islands, they had a meet-up for an egg and cupcake with chocolate somewhere on that map - play, solutions, cooperation, sounds elicitation. And the most interesting ❗️❗️❗️ checking the prints left by all of the mini objects on the PlayDoh 😲🥹🥰
Modelled words: open, want, more, help, look.

Why not toimplement some more lexical opportunities while working minimal pairs?

These photos show aftermath, yet we were focused on something else today. Sound /ch/ suggestion...let's say you have 3-element animal puzzles in a cupboard, 20 separate sets in a box, which gives you 60 elements overall, where you could introduce animal friends having a chew party - either 🥓 or 🥚 (yes, technically we don't chew eggs, but we need a sound)...so within that socially funny event accompanied by animals, your student has an opportunity to repeat 5 times 60 "chew" and /ch/ word is her target.
Would you do it, or would you keep the puzzles only for the sake of putting them together and practise sounds in a more "mature" way?

Yesterday, we played Pokemon cards to drill complex sentences!

I had no idea what I was doing, but my student gave me a quick lesson, and the rest is history 😅

Yesterday, I met the nicest crowd of Parents and shared some ideas on how to support their kids' language and how to read books in a slightly different way.
The parents were amazing! So engaged and open for a new dosage of knowledge. We had staff members with us and so much great feedback. Thank you 💕, you are the best!

We are baaackkkk!

Halfway still in the summer mode, halfway deep into assessments, reports, evaluations, target choices, discussions, and laughs.

One therapy has provoked me to post this photo as a reminder😉: under no circumstances should your therapy be only task oriented! Especially when you have a superbly chatty and equally vacation mode oriented student 😆

Long story short, add breaks to your therapies, and use this time as a dynamic assessment. I can guarantee you will have solid data and a happy kid in front of you 👊🏻

Science maaaadnessss during speech therapy some time ago...when we were not doing evaluations and it was not that humid.

Reading "A Crow And A Pitcher" by while running around the garden and looking for rocks? Absolutely!

Checking how big is my adopted clip I found in the garden during duties AND building great narration with our own plant? Just great!

If your therapies are curriculum based, then you cannot dream more 🤩

When you have one of these days when all your prep goes to the bin...

We used my colouring mat, and we worked on episodic narration; now check this out because it was created by my student with a little of cueing from my side:

There was a bistro in the ocean that all fish wanted to go to, but this bistro hired a very strict chef. This chef said that he would not open the bistro until five fish would make a booking for a table. So there was a group of fish friends: Aileen, Offre, Ran and Oakley....but it was not enough for the booking, so they swam through the ocean and looked for one more fish willing to dine with that bunch.

Oh gosh, how we enjoyed it!

Play Doh+trays+mini objects and TONS of communication with carrier phrases and sensory input.

We were dirty, the room was dirty, but the laugh we had...phew 😀🤩😍

When sharing Jamboard with 100 reinforcers for correct sound repetitions for a homework, and you open the file, and you gasp because you know it was massive 💟

🔎 🔍 🔎 Lynn A. Williams (2012) found that “a minimum dose of more than 50 trials and a duration of at least 30 sessions is required to be effective” when using the multiple oppositions phonology approach. The findings of Murray et. al. (2014) indicated that a high dose, or at least 60 trials per session, was beneficial in obtaining positive treatment outcomes for children with apraxia.

Last therapy we read a paragraph about a teacher who was scared going to work, as she wasn't sure if everything goes well...this week she is all over the unfinished comic from (cannot recommend enough). We discussed emotions, social interactions, expectations...and that was her first comic ever!

Find your happy squares for correct answers and surprised squares for other scenarios 😉

How to make a school based speech pathologist happy (rinse and repeat) 😍😆

Find the time and come to the meeting when invited (especially when there is a student with transition problem in your class), then cross-check the observations that were made and share your thoughts, later on stay open-minded and take that damn communication board to use in the classroom. 💫🧚‍♀️

I followed up today to ask how it goes and the teacher says it is working...not even with mentioned child, but all students by proxy have improved their drills.

Do you know this may not be the best solution for everyone?

The idea has its roots in Picture Exchange Communication System (certified PECS therapist here 👋🏻) and the goal is to motivate the child and to implement token policy in order to train required behaviours.

There is a stick, there is a 🥕 😉

What if we would modify the modalities and come up with better, functional solution, as we can agree that collecting stickers or stars in a longer run is totally not functional 🧐

Here is the recipe:
🟡 establish reinforcers (the reinforcers hierarchy has to be revised continuously AND those listed items have to be absolutely amazing and gazillion percent interesting for this child). Be careful! We have unhealthy tendency to choose for the child 😶‍🌫️

🟠 embed those reinforcers in communication board and present them, comment on them as CHOICES 🙆🏻‍♀️🤯🥳 because why to limit the fun and learning when we can improve communication, bond with the kid, teach social skills in one simple go 🧚‍♀️🦄
