March is National Nutrition Month, a campaign created 50 years ago by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics with the aim of supporting healthy eating and a sustainable way of living.

They explain:
“This year's theme is Fuel for the Future! During March, learn more about RDNs and NDTRs and discover the importance of fueling bodies at every age, plus eating with sustainability in mind.”

Some of their recommendations from the campaign include:
• Plan your meals and spending to limit cost and reduce food waste.
• Include food in your diet from all the different food groups (fruit and vegetables in particular, starchy foods/carbohydrates such as bread and rice, dairy such as milk and cheese, proteins such as chicken and fish and ‘good/unsaturated’ fat such as olive oil).

Adult cancer cases normally occur more in those 50+. However, a review done by Harvard University of 2022 research studies has revealed recent figures show a shocking number of individuals in their 40s and even 30s being diagnosed with cancer.

While it is not known exactly why there are more cases of younger individuals being diagnosed with cancer, it is believed that the increase in eating unhealthy and processed foods in addition to several other factors could be raising the risk.

Fortunately, cancer deaths are declining. However, there are steps that should be taken to continue to reduce the risk of cancer and detect any abnormalities early. Read more:

This huge study on alcohol consumption and risk of vascular dementia or Alzheimer’s introduces a bit of confusion. Far from the common concern that alcohol is bad for neurology, this suggest milder drinking is in fact somewhat protective but the risk switches to negative impacts for heavier consumption. We probably can’t draw too many conclusions but it does question the premise that alcohol outright is bad for neurological health.

This cohort study investigates the association of comprehensive patterns of changes in alcohol consumption with the incidence of all-cause dementia, Alzheimer disease, and vascular dementia among individuals in Korea.
