Yesterday, Saturday May 23, 2026, LSV hosted a Schizophrenia Awareness Workshop in observance of World Schizophrenia Awareness Day (May 24) bringing together caregivers, professionals, and community members for meaningful dialogue, education and support. The conversations served as a reminder that schizophrenia is not a life sentence of hopelessness, but a complex, treatable condition that requires understanding, early intervention, and sustained support (World Health Organization, 2022).
Our discussions challenged myths, highlighted the realities of living with schizophrenia, and emphasized a whole-person approach addressing mind, body, and local social context. The voices shared reinforced a critical truth: recovery is possible, but stigma remains a major barrier
We extend sincere thanks to our presenters and panelists - Dr. Stenette Davis , Dr. Paulette Gayle, Hylton Grace, Jasmine Powell, Erica Ebanks and Ivan Mclean. Your collective knowledge and experience is invaluable to this conversation. We also acknowledge HRM Prison Services, the Department of Community Rehabilitation, Poinciana Rehabilitation Centre and Alzheimer and Dementia Association CI (ADACI) for joining this important conversation. We thank you for the work you do every day in support of this vulnerable population group. To the caregivers, our volunteers and community partners, your presence contributes to a more informed and compassionate community.
Let us continue the work - supporting families, advocating for services and creating spaces where individuals living with schizophrenia are seen, heard, and valued.
