Broccoli: The Green Powerhouse You Should Be Eating More Of!

Broccoli, that little green tree we often find on our plates, is more than just a side dish - it's a nutritional powerhouse packed with benefits for your health! If you're looking for a simple way to boost your well-being, adding more broccoli to your diet is a fantastic start.

**Why is Broccoli So Good For You?**

This cruciferous vegetable is loaded with vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that contribute to a wide range of health benefits. Here are just a few highlights:

* **Rich in Vitamins and Minerals:** Broccoli is an excellent source of Vitamin C (for immune health), Vitamin K (for blood clotting and bone health), Vitamin A (for vision), folate (essential for cell growth), and potassium (for maintaining healthy blood pressure).
* **Powerful Antioxidants:** Broccoli contains antioxidants like sulforaphane and glucoraphanin, which help protect your cells from damage caused by free radicals. This can play a role in reducing the risk of chronic diseases.
* **Fiber-Rich:** High in dietary fiber, broccoli aids in digestion, promotes regularity, and helps you feel full and satisfied, potentially assisting with weight management.
* **May Support Heart Health:** Studies suggest that broccoli can contribute to a healthy heart by lowering cholesterol levels and reducing inflammation.
* **Potential Cancer-Fighting Properties:** Sulforaphane, a compound found in broccoli, has been linked to potential anti-cancer effects in various studies. While more research is needed, it's a promising area!

**Easy Ways to Add Broccoli to Your Diet:**

* **Roast it:** Roasting brings out the natural sweetness of broccoli. Toss with olive oil, salt, pepper, and your favorite spices for a delicious side dish.
* **Steam it:** Steaming is a quick and healthy way to cook broccoli, preserving its nutrients.
* **Add it to stir-fries:** Broccoli florets are a great addition to any stir-fry, adding texture and flavor.
* **Throw it in soups:** Broccoli adds a nutritional boost and a satisfying bite to soups.
* **Enjoy it raw:** Chop broccoli florets and toss them into salads or enjoy them with hummus or your favorite dip.
* **Make broccoli slaw:** Shredded broccoli stems and florets make a healthy and crunchy slaw.

**Tips for Buying and Storing Broccoli:**

* **Choose broccoli with firm, tightly closed florets and a vibrant green color.** Avoid broccoli with yellowing or wilting florets.
* **Store broccoli in the refrigerator in a plastic bag with a few holes for ventilation.** It will typically stay fresh for 3-5 days.

**The Bottom Line:**

Broccoli is a versatile and nutritious vegetable that offers a multitude of health benefits. From boosting your immune system to potentially fighting cancer, this green powerhouse deserves a prominent place in your diet. The Texas Department of State Health Services is reporting an outbreak of measles in the South Plains region of Texas. At this time, 146 cases have been identified since late January. Twenty of the patients have been hospitalized.

There has been one fatality in a school-aged child who lived in the outbreak area. The child was not vaccinated.

Due to the highly contagious nature of this disease, additional cases are likely to occur in the outbreak area and the surrounding communities. DSHS is working with local health departments to investigate the outbreak.

A reminder at how effective vaccines are at preventing disease. Most alive today have never seen a single case of smallpox because of vaccinations.

Vaccines work on many levels. None are 100% always going to prevent disease. They do greatly enhance the ability to prevent disease. Secondarily they greatly improve the ability for the body to suppress and fight disease if you manage to get sick. Vaccines are never just a shield from disease, they are a training regime for the immune system so it is ready to repel the diseases that try to invade your body.

The immune system with such training can be overwhelmed and let some through but then the reserve units get a crack at the invaders. Vaccines save lives. Those pushing the idea that being unvaccinated is generally better are at best misguided fools helping to give pharmaceutical corporations record profits.

Edit: we forgot to address the comment about masks on the bottom. Masks do work by both limiting the particles you blast out and reducing the incoming particles by creating a physical barrier. It is a two for one deal.
