What is ecography?
Ecography (ultrasound) is an imaging technique that uses high-frequency sound waves (not radiation) to create real-time images of internal organs, vessels, and soft tissues.
A probe (transducer) sends sound waves into the body → they reflect back from tissues → the machine converts them into an image on the screen.
Main uses
We use ultrasound widely for:
Abdomen: liver, gallbladder, biliary tree, pancreas, spleen, kidneys, bladder
Pelvis: uterus, ovaries, pregnancy, prostate
Obstetrics: fetal age, growth, position, placenta, amniotic fluid
Vascular: DVT study, carotid Doppler, arterial/venous flow
Thyroid, sc***um, breast, superficial lumps
Emergency / bedside (POCUS): FAST exam for trauma, cardiac function, pleural effusion, ascites, guided procedures
Advantages
No ionizing radiation → safe in pregnancy, children, repeated exams
Real-time → can see movement (heart, fetus, bowel, blood flow)
Portable → can be done at bedside, ICU, ER, home care
Guidance for procedures: biopsies, drainages, injections.
