A simple pencil grip hack, with a big impact ✏️
This easy setup can help guide the fingers into a more functional and comfortable pencil position, making writing feel more controlled and less tiring for children who struggle with handwriting or grip strength.
But it’s important to remember:
We usually don’t focus on correcting pencil grip before the age of 6.
Before that, the priority is giving children plenty of practical, hands-on experiences that naturally build hand strength, coordination, and fine motor skills
Activities like:
• Playing with playdough
• Using tweezers or tongs
• Clipping pegs
• Scribbling and coloring on different surfaces
• Building with blocks or LEGO
• Cutting with scissors
• Climbing, crawling, and messy play
All of these help prepare the hand for a more mature pencil grasp over time.
And when extra support is needed, small adaptations can make a big difference:
✏️ Short pencils or crayons
✏️ Slanted surfaces
✏️ Pencil grips
✏️ Vertical drawing activities
✏️ Finger placement cues and hand-strengthening games
Every child develops differently, and the goal is always comfort, function, and confidence, not “perfect” handwriting .
