Consider yourself lucky if you are able to sleep long and deep nowadays! Insomnia is at an all-time high and for several reasons. But sleep deprivation is a major health hazard - one that is ought to be tackled quickly - and here is why:
* During sleep, your brain reorganizes neural networks and cleans up cellular "garbage". You see, our brain memorizes facts, builds memories, and learns new skills during the day. But these bits of info need to be organized and integrated with info that your brain has been amassing over a lifetime. And so when you fail to get proper sleep, the process of reorganization does not occur - leaving your mind in a chaotic state and unable to store memories properly. But it doesn't end there. Numerous health issues could occur as a result including, increased appetite, blood sugar dysregulation, weakened immunity, spiked cortisol (stress hormone), poor heat regulation, and increased inflammation.
* Deep sleep allows the body to produce vital anti-aging hormones, which are crucial for repairing muscles and neural circuits. And this is one of the reasons why people wake up refreshed and rejuvenated after enjoying 7 to 8 hours of deep, uninterrupted sleep. Moreover, proper sleep affects detoxification pathways in a positive manner - helping the body get rid of dangerous toxins and waste products.
