As we wrap up the few remaining projects, there is one story that blew us away.
More than 106 years ago, a man immigrated from Turkey to Beirut, bought a plot of land, built a house for his family and was the first person to bring electricity to the area in Rmeil.
Today, the three-story building is occupied by two sisters who remember their father and family very fondly. They swore to only have one another and never get married after both their siblings passed away following their wedding. They made it clear though, that it never stopped them from having boyfriends!
It is no surprise that they feel very protective of their home - a place that saw birth, death, love, pain, joy, and sorrow. A place that has seen it all from both World Wars to the Golden ages of Beirut to the civil war to the August 4th blast.
Neither the UN nor the army nor anybody else was allowed to assess the devastating damage, but they trusted us and believed in our mission. We are incredibly honoured to be repairing all doors and windows of their home so that these two beautiful women can continue weaving their stories in their safe and protected childhood home.
