Have you filled your love cup recently?

It’s well and truly 2022, and if for you, the daily grind has left your love cup feeling a little empty with not much left to tend to your basic needs, I just want to say, you’re not alone. And there’s no shame in needing a little help every now and then.

Too often, my patients are trying to do it all.

The list of imminent tasks loom and the things that top-up our love cup quickly fall by the wayside.

I just want this post to be a little reminder that when you fill your own cup first, giving from the overflow can be a lot easier.

So, when was the last time you filled up your love cup?

~ Gua Sha ~

Holler if you've had gua sha and love it!

For those who haven't yet gotten the memo, gua sha is a traditional East Asian healing technique that had been used for over 2,000 years.

It's a therapeutic dermal friction technique that literally translates to "scrape [out the] toxins/rash" where the body's surface is unidirectionally press-stroked with a smooth rounded edge instrument to intentionally raise therapeutic petechiae and ecchymosis (red spots from bleeding of the micro-capillaries under the skins surface).

The therapeutic marks that come up after a good scraping are often red but can often be blue, purple or black too. The more harmful factors (Sha-toxins) that build up in the body and tissues, the darker the marks will be. But no matter the colour, marks fade within a week on most people!

Gua sha acts to remove blockages and the pooling of bad "toxic" Qi causing pain and malfunction. On a cellular level, the pressure from the scraping technique enlarges the space between capillary walls and draws out congested fluids and toxins to the surface tissue layers, allowing fresh blood and lymph circulation to relieve stagnation and granulation in the tissues, often bringing about immediate relieve from pain.

Gua sha works exceptionally well in cases of muscular pain, tension, and congestion in cases of acute illness, physical stress, poor posture, a history of trauma, relieving fatigue, as well as for general health enhancement and longevity.

I incorporate gua sha and cupping in most acupuncture treatments πŸ’†πŸ»β€β™€οΈ

~ FIRE CUPPING ~

The only time you don't need cupping, is when you've just had cupping! 😝

It's an ancient form of medicine stemming not just from China, but many folk traditions all around the world including the Middle East, Europe, Russia and Africa. One of the oldest medical textbooks in the world, the Ebers Papyrus, describes how the ancient Egyptians used cupping therapy in 1,550 B.C!!

I place the flame inside the glass cups to burn off the oxygen within and create the negative pressure required for the suction effect of the cups.

Lifting up the muscle layer from the fascia, cupping therapy offers pain relief and assists with inflammation, blood flow, muscle relaxation and well-being.

It's honestly better than va**um (I'm just assuming that but y'know..?) and it's my fave thing when I'm feeling crazy wound up or if my patients walk into their appointment all frazzled, stressed, mind and mouth going a million miles an hour, shoulders hunched up to their ears!

HEY MONKEY MIND! STOP πŸ›‘ RIGHT πŸ›‘ THERE πŸ›‘

But it's not just a great stress and myofascial release. The acupuncture meridian (or channel) that runs along the back (where I often place the cups) has acupuncture points that correspond with all the ingernal organs in Chinese medicine. So it's a great way to invigorate and open up those stagnant, blocked, sluggish channels of Qi flow in preparation for the body to be mega ultra receptive to the acupuncture I then follow cupping with acupuncture.

I have 2 appointments left this Wednesday and a few still up for snaps on Saturday.

If you're needing some cupping & acu TLC, follow the link in my bio to book online, or if you have any questions or curiosities, shoot me a DM 🌼

Have a beautiful week everyone and may you find some stillness in body and mind, a little bit each day 😌

~ Lower Back Pain ~

Scoliosis, sciatica, arthritis or just plain stiff and sore!

Are you living with lower back pain?

Perhaps your knees don't feel too great either. Weak, unstable, popping out of place even?

From a Traditional Chinese Medicine point of view, the Kidneys govern the lower back and lower extremities. They also govern bones - hello osteoarthritis and disc degeneration!

The Kidneys are associated with the Water element and Winter, so it's not unusual for these niggles to come up in this season. And golly have we been smacked in the face with these wild winds, rains and good ol' sedentary lockdown!

Even if it runs in the family, even if it's been 10 years, not all hope is lost. There is a lot that Chinese medicine can do!

I'll ask you questions like:
β€’ Is it worse in the morning or evening?
β€’ With activity or rest?
β€’ With warmth or cold?

I'll also test a few of your movements.

Then we'll get you on the treatment table for some gua sha (scraping), cupping and acupuncture. I might also recommend you some herbs, supplements along with some diet and lifestyle recommendations.

Sound good? You can follow the link in my bio to book yourself in online xo Maya

~ ANXIETY RELIEF & ACUPUNCTURE ~

I think I can speak for all of us when I say anxiety sucks!

But are you just living with it? How are you managing your anxiety? Has it come out of "no where"? Or gotten worse since COVID? Or have you always just operated from an anxious state for as long as ypu can remember and to the point where it's just your normal and you just don't know how to be any other way?

From panic attacks, hot-cold flushes, a racing heart, feeling endlessly tense, wound up and on edge because of endless worry, fear and obsessive thinking... I'm exhausted just thinking about it!Wouldn't it be nice to not have to avoid situations that make you anxious and impact on your work, study and social life?

While acupuncture has been shown to regulate the nervous system and brings you down from the edge pretty much instantly, getting to the root cause of anxiety may require a holistic and integrative approach to achieve long-lasting sustainable outcomes.

Acupuncture can help manage your anxiety now, and remind you what it feels like to be at ease in your body again. Bringing back your true essence so you can remember who you really are before your brain wiring got all out of whack and tried to confuse you!

I would love the hear your lived experience. DM me if you feel like sharing where you're at right now πŸ’ž

In the mean time, check in with yourself on the following:

βœ” are you getting your 8hrs sleep?
βœ” are you eating at least 3 square meals per day?
βœ” is your anxiety directly related to your coffee intake?
βœ” could you be taking too much on?
βœ” can you take some time to journal your anxious thoughts?
βœ” is there someone you can speak to about how you're feeling? Friends or family? Workplaces and uni's also often offer a free counselling service. If this isn't applicable to you, seeking a Mental Health Care Plan from your GP is the way to go if you want to speak to a professional. CBT techniques are the most widely used.
βœ” could your iron levels be low? How long was it since your last blood test?

Just a few things to explore to get you started.

Happy weekend friends 🌼

~ OPENING THE NASAL PASSAGES ~

I just love the diversity of the close to 1,000 acupuncture points on our extraordinary body.

In my previous 2 posts I discusses the power of this acupuncture point Yin Tang in calming the spirit and helping us tap into our intuition and see truth. But also on a less spiritual and more practical level, this point is also wonderful at opening our nasal passages as well as alleviating facial pain and headaches!

Think beginning of a cold, chronic hay fever, allergies, sinusitis with congestion that makes your face feel like its exploding, frontal throbbing headaches and also dizziness and hypertension.

If you can't make it in for an acupuncture appointment, fret not!

πŸ’†β€β™€οΈ You could still self-administer some acupressure massage at this point. Use slow circular motions for up to five minutes.

Adding diluted essentials oils is also an option!

🌼 Chamomile, lavender, sandalwood or ylang ylang for calming.

🌱 Eucalyptus, marjoram, peppermint, thyme or rosemary pf opening the nose.

🌿 Peppermint, rosemary, lavender, chamomile or eucalyptus for headaches and migraines

Dilute in your fave tox-free face oil or moisturiser. I like to use jojoba oil.

~ CALMING THE SPIRIT & NERVOUS SYSTEM ~

Probably one of the most used acupuncture points, Yin tang is said to calm the Shen (Spirit/Mind) of the receiver. The intent being to restore calm and ease through the stimulation of this point. You could say it's even sedating in a way. Perhaps why my friend calls it the crack point! πŸ˜‚

Often used for anxiety-related symptoms such as insomnia, restlessness, irritability and a busy monkey mind. While acupuncture in general has been shown to balance the nervous system, this point in particular shines at activating our parasympathetic state (rest & digest) while dialing down our sympathetic response (fight or flight). This in turn moderates high blood pressure, lowers cortisol levels and slows the heart rate - i.e. calms you right down!

Can't make it to an acupuncture appointment right now? Fret not, because for everywhere we can place a needle, we can also acupressure!

If you're feeling a bit anxious right now, I challenge you to just take a pause from your scrolling and take a 2-5min break to:

1. Sit back in a comfortable position
2. Become aware of your breath
3. Close your eyes
4. Relax the muscles of your furrowed brow
5. Use your thumb or index finger to find the point between your eyebrows (this area is called the glabella), and press your Yin tang point
6. Inhale and exhale deeply as you press the point, applying firm pressure
7. Move in small circlular motions one way for a minute, then the other way for another minute
8. Now move up-and-down and side-to-side
9. Try to breath smoothly and evenly

I promise it will help release some of your muscle and mental tension so that you'll feel less anxious and worried afterwards. Go on, give it a go :)

If you're in the pits at the moment and just can't muster the will to help yourself, please know that there's help out there. There's no shame in reaching out for support and having a team of professionals help you through this sometimes very overwhelming and complex life!

~ YIN TANG ~

Yin tang is the acupuncture point between the brows that many whom have had acupuncture would be familiar with.

Associated with our "third eye" it is said to be the sacred hall of our inner intuitive vision. Here we can see beyond the mundane, into the spirit of all things.

Corresponding to the upper dantian, the "dantian"is traditionally believed to be the home of the Shen (Spirit / Mind). The "space" of the upper dantian, known also as the "crystal palace" is the centre of the skull, between the two hemispheres of the brain, where the thalamus and hypothalamus glands rest.

Likened to the room in the Emperor's palace where he would contemplate big decisions and meditate on them. I use this point in treatments to help my patients go to that place in their mind where they can see beyond what is, and see into the deeper meaning of things. To see through people (and themselves), and into universal truth.

For some people, seeing the truth of things may be too painful and it may take time to open their third eye - that is assuming that they want to. And it's totally okay to not be interested in tapping into this ability!

If you do want to open your third eye and free your soul, you need to move into appreciation of all the things that got you where you are today, let go of the pain from the past and rise above it to realise the lessons and the gifts of all experiences.

~ AUTUMN ~

The external decline of nature.

The drying and the cooling.

Within us and outwardly in our environment.

As the wood element directs inward, our Yang energy decreases, the seed of Yin begins to grow.

It's time to gather our energies on the inside.

Take things slow. Don't push yourself, force yourself or berrate yourself for not wanting to be more YANG! Now is not the time. Your body will likely argue with you if you don't listen :p

Foods with an ascendant energy and sour flavour (think apples) will help to support our inner composure and serenity.

Mildly acrid and energetically warm foods will compensate for the onset of external cold such as oats, millet, corn, rice, carrots, leeks, radishes, cauliflower, beef and lamb.

If you're experiencing the onset of a cold, as many people have the past few weeks, tackle the inner cold and shivers with garlic, cinnamon, ginger and spring onions to stimulate Qi circulation and rapidly bring your immune system (Wei/Defensive Qi) to the surface, hopefully helping you "sweat it out" as they say.

For those experiencing more sinus and phlegmmy type symptoms, turn to warm and energetically dry foods such as rice dishes with acrid spices.

If you're feeling more dryness, turn to moistening foods such as pear and tofu.

Avoid fatty, oily, cold and dairy, which burden our digestion worsening phlegminess and "Dampness" as we call it in Chinese medicine. Especially during wet weather.

Our external environment is often reflected internally.

Pay attention and you might just experience this yourself :) Have you already realised this?

I'd love to hear your experience and also recipes for autumn or the onset of illness. What is your body craving? What are your go-to's?

~ UPSET TUMMY ~

Suffering from IBS? Caught a parasite years ago and things just havent been the same since? Chronic constipation? Plain old sluggish digestion and bloating? Or something more complex like ulcerative colitis or Crohn's disease?

There's so much we can do with acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine. And the wonders of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) don't stop there. Did you know there's a whole sub-specialty of Chinese medicine diet therapy?

Here are some general tips if you've been having tummy troubles lately:

πŸ„ eat at regular times each day (as best as you can)

🍳 eat mindfully rather than multi-tasking (that includes TV, reading and scrolling your phone)

🍜 chew your food well

πŸ† eat simply, avoiding an excessive amount of heavy foods and rich flavours

πŸ— eat wholefoods, avoiding an excess of packaged and fast foods

πŸ… eat seasonally, organically and locally whenever you can (but don't stress out as a result of trying to do this perfectly either)

πŸ₯— avoid eating cold and raw foods excessively. A seemingly "healthy" raw diet of slads and smoothies will only weaken your digestive fire further and make you more bloated and gassey etc.

πŸ₯˜ eat more slow-cooked foods. The "stomach is the pot"! As it receives food and liquids to β€œdecompose and cook” them. If you're having digestive issues, don't make your tummys job harder than it needs to be.

🍲 eat by the season - more slow cooked and yin nourishing foods as we come into autumn - a rather dry season.

πŸ₯‘ avos nourish our yin πŸ˜‹ but they're also cold and a bit damp so have them with zaatar or dukkah and eat with other warmer foods, and perhaps not everyday! (It's hard I know). No one food item is perfect. Eat everything in moderation and combine flavours and temperatures to balance each other out when required.

One size doesn't fit all though... so look out for more food tips on my insta in future. If you'd like me to assess your constitution and give you some personalised tips for how to eat best for your body according to TCM principles, you can shoot me a DM or just book online - link in bio.

Happy digesting munchkins 😘
