We were delighted to host Dr. Wael Saasouh, a dear alumnus of our department and a 2012 graduate of our residency program, for a specialty lecture to our faculty and residents.

Dr. Saasouh is a board-certified anesthesiologist at Wayne State University, Regional Director for Research, and founding chair of the NorthStar Anesthesia Research Fellowship.

During the session, Dr. Saasouh shared insights from recent publications, offered recommendations on intraoperative hypotension, and discussed opportunities for research collaboration.

The session was very well received by our attendings and residents, who are always grateful to connect and collaborate with program alumni.

Syma Azar arrived at AUB joining this fall to join the ranks of a family with deep connections to the university. It’s a legacy dating back to her grandparents, Dr. Musa Muallem (BA ’53, MD ’57), a pioneering anesthesiologist and longtime medical director of AUBMC’s Division of Respiratory Therapy who invented several devices including the Muallem Jet Ventilator and Cuff Inflator Monitor that advanced airway management and are still used worldwide, and Dr. Muna Matta Muallem (BS ’65, MD ’69), who was associate clinical professor of dermatology at AUBMC until 2023; Syma’s mother, Dr. Maya Muallem (BS ’96, MD ’00), is a dermatologist, clinical associate at AUBMC, and secretary general of the Lebanese Society of Dermatology.
Two generations of physicians, educators, innovators, and donors leaving a lasting mark at AUB. We can’t wait to see how Syma will leave her mark as the 3rd generation of this AUB legacy family. Welcome to AUB Syma!

Our CA-2 residents participated in a Simulation Workshop led by Dr. Carine Zeeni and Dr. Nancy Abou Nafeh.

Dr. Zeeni’s session focused on the recognition and management of Local Anesthetic Systemic Toxicity (LAST). Residents identified neurological and cardiac symptoms, examined risk factors, reviewed treatment priorities, practiced lipid emulsion therapy, and reinforced teamwork through checklist use.

Dr. Abou Nafeh’s scenario focused on intraoperative bronchospasm in an asthmatic patient, with residents practicing early recognition, initiating management with bronchodilators and ventilation adjustments, exploring differential diagnoses of increased airway pressure, strengthening effective communication, and monitoring patient stabilization.
