In a major step toward a healthier Lebanon, the Lebanese Ministry of Public Health - وزارة الصحة العامة — in collaboration with the Knowledge to Policy (K2P) Center at the American University of Beirut (AUB) and Resolve to Save Lives — has officially launched the National Campaign to Eliminate Trans Fatty Acids. The campaign is proudly endorsed by the Lebanese Order of Dietitians and the Lebanese Society of Cardiology.
At the launch event, Minister of Public Health Dr. Rakan Nasreddine stressed the importance of collective action, declaring: “The health of the Lebanese people is not a choice — it is a right and a collective responsibility.” He called for strong cooperation across sectors — government, private industry, and civil society — to shift consumption patterns and ensure a healthier future for all.
Ms. Clara Abou Samra, Project Manager at the K2P Center, highlighted the global toll of trans fats. She emphasized the urgency of building on existing momentum and regulations, strengthening partnerships to eliminate trans fats in Lebanon and “raising awareness at all levels including communities, schools and daycares and among healthcare professionals, allied-healthcare professionals, policymakers and the public”.
Dr. Maha Hoteit from the Lebanese University presented research findings on the health risks of trans fats and called for more studies on the Lebanese food environment “to better understand who is most vulnerable to coronary heart disease based on their diet.”
The campaign marks a pivotal moment in Lebanon’s efforts to safeguard its population from preventable diseases — with evidence, collaboration, and policy at the forefront.
