Last Friday I had the pleasure to give a talk on the concept of sequential traumatization during the second annual conference of the Lebanese Order of Psychologists - LOPsy.

Sequential traumatization which adopts a social perspective on trauma views it as a chronological sequence of phases, as opposed to a focus on a single primary experience of violence. It provides a more comprehensive picture of the long-term and multi-layered processes of traumatization and their impact on the individual’s psychosocial wellbeing and marks a fundamental shift in the understanding of trauma: rather than an event with pre-determined consequences, we now have a process with a changing traumatic situation. The description of these changes is the framework that defines how we understand trauma. This new focus on the process is more complex than the concept of a single traumatic event, but it does more justice to the survivors’ situations because it always also considers the aspect of a society's responsibility. The increased potential for support arising from this different awareness comes from a more elaborate understanding of the compounding social factors that influence a person’s psychological experience as well as from assigning responsibility for coping with traumatic experiences not just to the individual affected, but also – in a normative sense – to society and policymakers. Involving the political dimension and society also holds the potential to reduce the burden of responsibility on the individual, while fostering social cohesion and peace-building processes.
