Swedana (from Sanskrit “Sweda” = sweat) is an important Ayurvedic therapy that means inducing sweat through herbal steam or heat treatments.
🌿 What it is:
Swedana is usually done after an oil massage (Abhyanga). The body, already nourished with medicated oils, is then exposed to warm herbal steam. This helps the oil pe*****te deeper, loosens toxins, and opens the body’s channels (srotas).
✨ Benefits of Swedana:
Expels ama (toxins) through sweat
Relieves stiffness, heaviness, and pain in the body
Reduces vata and kapha imbalances
Improves circulation and metabolism
Relaxes muscles and mind
Prepares the body for Panchakarma cleansing therapies
🌸 How it’s done:
Herbs are boiled in water to create medicated steam (often with eucalyptus, dashmoola, tulsi, neem, etc.)
The steam is directed onto the body while the head is kept cool (to protect brain/eyes)
Duration: usually 10–20 minutes, depending on constitution and condition
👉 It’s considered deeply healing, especially for arthritis, muscle stiffness, fibromyalgia, obesity, and stress.
