Parents,

School is beginning after a nice relaxing summer break. I hope you had fun with your children and they are prepared to go back to school. As you sit down to discuss topics like manners, school etiquette and homework policies, please add disability awareness and being open to friendships with children who have disabilities.

"Show them it's completely normal to interact with someone who has a disability."

"The volunteers read hundreds of sentences out loud while the scientists recorded signals from the brain’s speech centers, which control muscles in the tongue, lips, jaw and larynx.

"Next, a computer learned how to decode those signals and use them to synthesize speech."

Scientists have found a way to transform electrical signals in the brain into intelligible speech. The advance may help people paralyzed by a stroke or disease, but the technology is experimental.

A glimpse on the LIDCOMBE PROGRAM :

Le programme Lidcombe a été très controversé à son démarrage car il était en contradiction avec les pensées de l’époque. Il ne fallait pas porter l’attention de l’enfant sur sa parole mais plutôt rester sur l’échange c’est-à-dire le fond. Les cliniciens étaient inquiets à la pensée d’un traitement administré par les parents. Actuellement, ce programme est celui dont l’efficacité est validée par le plus grand nombre d’études. Le cadre est très structuré.

This program was very controversial at its start because it was in contradiction with the thoughts of the time. It was not necessary to bring the attention of the child on his word but rather to remain on the exchange that is to say the bottom. The clinicians were worried about the treatment administered by the parents. Currently, this program is the one whose effectiveness is validated by the largest number of studies. The frame is very structured.

At 3 years, kids are able to recognize the difference between the fluent speech and the stuttering. (Ambrose et Yairi 1994)

Tip: It's crucial to determine in the assessment if the child is aware of his stuttering or No.

"Scientists have figured out is that learning to read is not natural—it’s not like learning to talk or walk, in which all you need is immersion or interaction with your environment. Without structured, evidence-based reading instruction with phonics at its core, many students will struggle with reading and spelling. If teachers are not taught the science of reading (and if schools and districts do not employ evidence-based curricula), many students are deprived of explicit and systematic instruction in how written language works."

Teacher Kyle Redford has long advocated that dyslexic children need specialized instruction in how to decode words. But a recent look at reading research called her to question her stance—and now she says all students should learn this way.
