Which Massage Styles Are Best?

You may have noticed that different massage styles are popular at different times. And you may have wondered whether each was just part of a passing fad or the latest, greatest massage technique. An even more important question is how to tell whether the latest style will actually help you.
Styles used in massage therapy range from long, smooth strokes to short, percussive strokes. Some massage therapists use oils and lotions, others do not. Most massage therapists have clients unclothe for a massage, but some do not. A massage can last anywhere from 5 minutes to 2 hours.

Before you can decide which massage style is best for you, you need to ask yourself a question. Do you simply want a massage for relaxation and stress control? Or do you need symptom relief or help with a certain health condition? Before booking a massage, let the therapist know what you're looking for and ask which style the therapist uses. Many use more than one style. The therapist may customize your massage, depending on your age, condition, or any special needs or goals you have.

The Origin of Ayurvedic Medicine

Ayurveda literally means "science of life", and it represents the oldest complex medical system about healthy lifestyle principles. The origin of its teachings dates back to the ancient Indian scriptures (Vedas). Those scriptures came into existence due to the inner realisation of illumined Sages (Rishis).

The first significant writings about Ayurveda (Charaka Samhita) appeared around the first millennium B.C. The second scholarly writing (Sushruta Samhita) originated one century later and deals with ayurvedic surgery. The third most important ayurvedic document (Asthanga Hridayam) is from the 7th century A.D. and it is a well-arranged compilation of two previous writings. Between the 5th century B.C. and 5th century A.D. the ayurvedic principles spread to all known corners of the world – China, Tibet, Persia, Arabia, Egypt, Greece and Rome – where they blended with local traditions and cultural habits. This served as a common ground for various new teachings and systems of natural medicine. Therefore ayurveda is regarded as ‘the mother of all medical systems.’

Ayurveda Sri Lanka

Ayurveda is a very distinct medical science and has some unique features. Ayurveda gives ample emphasis on the preventive aspects and helps in promotion and prolongation of a healthy and happy life.

Chikitsa (treatment) is the outcome of efforts and proper employment of Chatushpada (four pillars of treatment). Ayurveda believes that success of any treatment is totally depends upon Chatushpada of Chikitsa. Chatushpada are Bhishag (physician), the Upastha (Medical Attendant), Rogi (patient) and Dravya (medicine).

These four factors are mutually dependant on each other. These four pillars are considered mandatory to provide relief to the patient. Absence of any one of these, the treatment would not be possible. Each of the four factors possesses four qualities essential for a treatment to be successful. When all these four factors are favorable, then the treatment will be successful.

Massage therapy is a form of manual therapy that involves moving soft tissues in the body to reduce stress, ease muscle tension, and promote relaxation and overall well-being. It is a hands-on technique performed by trained massage therapists.

Massage has been practiced for thousands of years. Today, if you need a massage, you can choose from about 80 massage therapy styles with a wide variety of pressures, movements, and techniques. These all involve pressing, rubbing, or manipulating muscles and other soft tissues with hands and fingers. Sometimes, even forearms, elbows, or feet are used.

You may have noticed that different massage styles are popular at different times. And you may have wondered whether each was just part of a passing fad or the latest, greatest massage technique. An even more important question is how to tell whether the latest style will actually help you.

How to do an ayurvedic massage?
Ayurvedic massage for body pain is best done at the center by trained professionals. As this massage technique involves stimulating various pressure points of the body, it helps relieve the Vata aggravation and reduce pain sensations. Normally an Abhyanga is done for 45 min on the whole body. In certain conditions, where massage is required in specific areas like an ayurvedic massage for knee pain, the procedure only lasts for 20 to 39 minutes.

Why massage relieves pain?

Massaging the area having edema helps to relieve the pain, inflammation, and its associated signs as it improves localized circulation. When tactile and temperature sensations are activated in particular dermatomes, it triggers the corresponding nerve fibers and reduces pain sensations.

According to the concept of Ayurveda, massage stimulates the Tiryak Vaha Dhamani situated on the pore of hair follicles. When medicated oil seeps through these minute-transferring pores, it helps to reduce the accumulation of vitiated Vata entities. As oil directly helps to normalize this Vata due to its unctuousness and warmth, Ayurvedic massage for body pain is highly beneficial.

Causes of Joint pain
According to Ayurveda, having an optimal digestive fire is the key to a disease-free life. When this fire is misjudged and various weird combinations of incompatible food varieties experiment, it results in the formation of Ama, or the product of improper digestion. This factor further abates the fire and reduces the nutrient reach to various tissue elements and the stagnation of doshic entities. Thus the formation of various systemic dysfunctions, the chief being joint pain.

Shirodhara comes from the two Sanskrit words “shiro” (head) and “dhara” (flow). It’s an Ayurvedic healing technique that involves having someone pour liquid — usually oil, milk, buttermilk, or water — onto your forehead. It’s often combined with a body, scalp, or head massage.

Ayurveda is a holistic health approach that originated in India thousands of years ago. It focuses on rebalancing the life forces, called doshas, within your body.

Shirodhara is said to have relaxing, soothing, and calming effects on the body and mind.
Research also suggests that shirodhara may help

Keep in mind that most studies looking at the benefits of shirodhara have been pretty small, using only a handful of participants. Still, none of them suggest that the treatment has any negative effects.

How it’s done
If you’re new to shirodhara, it’s best to work with a professional who’s been trained in Ayurvedic practices (more on how to find one later).
At the start of the appointment, you’ll be asked to lie on your back and relax.
Next, the practitioner will heat up the liquid so it roughly matches your body temperature and place it in a bowl. They may hold the bowl over your head or use a stand.
Either way, the liquid will gently drip through a small hole in the bottom of the bowl, landing between your eyebrows. Your eyes will be covered with a lightweight barrier for protection.
The whole process generally lasts anywhere from 30 to 90 minutes. It might involve a massage before or after the treatment.

Types of Ayurveda Massages
There are several types of Ayurveda massages, each designed to address specific imbalances in the body. Here are some of the most popular ones:

1. AbhyangaOne of the most widely-used Ayurveda massages, Abhyanga is a full-body massage that uses warm, herb-infused oils. The therapist applies friction-based strokes to improve circulation, relieve stiffness, and enhance immune function.

2. GandharvaThis unique Ayurveda massage combines tactile touch with sound therapy. Gandharva uses herbal oils along with soothing vibrations from crystal singing bowls to promote relaxation and stimulate energy flow, leaving you feeling calm and refreshed.

3. PizichilliIn this treatment, two therapists continuously pour warm herbal oil over your body. Pizichilli helps purify and detoxify, while nourishing your skin and revitalizing your body.

4. PodikizhiPodikizhi is a therapeutic Ayurveda massage for those dealing with joint pain, inflammation, or muscle spasms. A muslin cloth bag filled with medicinal herbs is dipped in warm oil and applied to problem areas, providing relief from pain and discomfort.

5. VisheshThis deep-tissue Ayurveda massage uses minimal oil and focuses on slow, penetrating strokes to release deep-seated tension, break up muscle adhesions, and detoxify the body. Vishesh is perfect for those seeking intense relaxation and muscle relief.

6. ShirodharaOne of the most soothing and meditative treatments, Shirodhara involves pouring warm, medicated oil onto the forehead and the third eye chakra. This therapy calms the nervous system, relieves mental fatigue, and helps reduce stress and anxiety.

7. Marma TherapyIn Marma therapy, the therapist focuses on stimulating Marma points, or energy points, located throughout the body. This therapy helps activate the body’s natural healing abilities, improve energy flow, and promote overall balance.

8. Odyssey TreatmentThe Odyssey Ayurveda massage is a combination of five different Ayurvedic techniques performed by two therapists. It includes dry-glove exfoliation for detoxification, followed by an Abhyanga massage, the deep strokes of Vishesh, and finishes with Marma therapy to restore balance and harmony.
