Asha Foundation

Asha Foundation Asha Foundation supports communities in Colombo by helping people build ladders out of poverty.

Asha Foundation's main activity is based around the community of Badowita in Mount Lavinia, Colombo. This is a low income settlement where approximately 18,000 people reside. The area suffers from multiple deprivation including poor housing, high unemployment and lack of opportunities for children and young people, especially those with disabilities and special needs. Asha Foundation provides services to children, families and elders living in this area. Our most recent achievement has been the construction of a purpose-built community centre where community based activities and projects take place. We offer support to all in the community regardless of ethnicity or religion and do not promote one religion over another. Our current projects include:

- Afterschool provision for children behind in their schooling. Educational support in Sinhala, Tamil, English, Maths and Computing is offered to those in need on a daily basis.

- Educational and medical/therapeutic support for those with disabilities in the area.

- Counselling to both children and adults in need.

- Sewing project - this is an income generation scheme for adults in the area unable to find work due to to family commitments or other reasons so that they can earn money whilst working at home.

- Elders - Basic rations/essential medicines are provided to isolated elders in the area who have limited family support and who are unable to generate an adequate income for themselves.

- Employment training for young people. We have run several courses in conjunction with industry professionals in order to enable young people to find stable and permanent work. Please get in contact for more information on present and future projects.

Our warmest wishes for a peaceful Vesak🙏🏻🌸

Our children had a joyous day creating Vesak cards and lanterns🏮🪷

While the little ones created cards to give out, the older kids from Grade 3 made beautiful lanterns which was lovingly hung in our center. It was a creativity filled day with shares of blessings and laughter!

Avurudu Celebrations at Asha Foundation☀️

We celebrated සූර්ය මංගල්‍යය’2023 on the 10th of April. It was a joyous gathering amongst the children and teachers. The celebration was filled with spreading the true essence of the festive season through introducing the Avurudu rituals and traditions alongside wearing the traditional Avurudu clothing that enhanced the experience of the festival. The children also participated in Dancing performances and a range of Avurudu games that kept them engaged and happy throughout.

We spread the warmth and happiness of Avurudu to you all and wish you a prosperous happy Sinhala and Tamil new year!

Happy Women’s Day!

The theme for International Women’s Day, 8 March 2023 is, “DigitALL: Innovation and technology for gender equality.”
The call for social transformation from women who are at the forefront of movements for social change -- online and in the streets -- in their own countries and around the world is witnessed every day!

In keeping with our motto “Toward a better tomorrow”, our very own Asha Team of women are at the forefront making transformative social change on the ground where we find ourselves in Sri Lanka! May our work be participatory for innovation and technology for gender equality!
