Basic Surgical Skills Course
for Surgical SHOs
organized by the College of Surgeons of Sri Lanka
in collaboration with the
Batticaloa Medical Association
was successfully completed on 13th of March 2024 at the Main Auditorium, Teaching Hospital Batticaloa with a participation of 68 SHOs all over the country. The initial part of the session was a series of lectures conducted by experienced consultants on the following topics.
• Introduction to Surgical Instruments and Sutures by Dr. Rubeka Dissanayake, Consultant General Surgeon at Base Hospital, Walachchenai
• Wound Debridement and Incision and Drainage of Abscess by Dr. Rifzan Jameel, Consultant General Surgeon at Base Hospital Akkaraipattu
• Skin Suturing by Dr. Anton Swarnan, Consultant General Surgeon at Base Hospital Kalawanchchikudy
• Bowel Anastomosis by Dr. Chathuranga Keppitiyagama, Consultant Gastrointestinal Surgeon at National Hospital Kandy
• Vascular Anastomosis by Dr. Thilina Gunawardana, Consultant Vascular and Transplant Surgeon at National Nephrology Specialized Hospital, Pollonnaruwa
• Tendon and Nerve Repair by Dr. N. Pahieerathan, Acting Consultant Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon at Teaching Hospital Batticaloa
• Abdominal Wall Closure by Dr. K. Jayanthan, Consultant General Surgeon at Base Hospital Kinniya
• Intercostal Tube Insertion by Acting Consultant General Surgeon and a Lecturer in Surgery at Teaching Hospital Batticaloa and
• Urethral Catheterization by Dr. M. Anomillan, Consultant Urologist at Teaching Hospital Batticaloa.
The latter part of the session consists of a hands on workshop on,
• Bowel Anastomosis
• Vascular Anastomosis
• Tendon and Nerve Repair and
• Skin Suturing
followed by a demonstration of
• Intercostal Tube Insertion.
The lectures were very informative and timely, providing valuable insights into fundamental surgical techniques. Following the lectures, the hands-on workshop along with the demonstrations provided an opportunity for the participants to practice and brush up on their surgical skills under the expert supervision and the guidance of consultants. This whole session aided them to gain a valuable practical experience and enhance their surgical proficiency. Positive feedback from the participants reflected their satisfaction with the course, highlighting its effectiveness in imparting essential surgical knowledge and skills. Overall, the event was highly productive, contributing significantly to the professional development of the participants and affirming its success in meeting its objectives.
