IT Band syndrome
If you’ve experienced pain on the outside of your knee, you may have IT band syndrome or iliotibial band syndrome (sometimes referred to as "tight IT band" or "ITBS"). This is a common condition in competitive athletes and other active people. It’s an injury often caused by activities where you bend your knee repeatedly, like running, cycling, hiking, and walking long distances.
Your IT band is a thick bunch of fibers that runs from the outside of your hips to the outside of your thigh and knee down to the top of your shinbone. If your IT band gets too tight, it can lead to swelling and pain around your knee.
The main symptom of ITB syndrome is a sharp pain or ache on the outside of your knee, which may spread up or down your leg, and occasionally up towards your hip. The outside of your knee may be tender to the touch and you may have some swelling. The pain may be worse when you run downhill, or if you run or cycle for longer than normal. You may find that the pain starts at a similar point in your run, and goes when you stop.
Usually IT band syndrome can be relieved by performing exercises and stretches to relieve tightness and promote flexibility and strength. Physiotherapists can carefully assess your knee and plan an individual programme of rehabilitation exercises to help strengthen your knee and leg muscles gradually.

What you should know about 👉🏼Sciatica
Sciatica pain is caused by an irritation, inflammation, pinching or compression of the sciatic nerve in the lower back. This can be caused by a herniated disc, foraminal stenosis, inflammation or irritation of piriformis muscle. It is felt as nerve pain radiating from the buttock down the back of the leg, often when sitting, sneezing or coughing. You may also feel lower back pain, and/or tingling, pins and needles, numbness or weakness in your leg.
Physical therapy and exercises are beneficial for sciatica pain relief as they can help reduce pain and inflammation, improve physical function, and prevent sciatica symptoms from recurring.

Scoliosis is a condition that affects the normal shape of the spine. It alters a person's back alignment and posture. With scoliosis, the spine moves to the side and turns. Scoliosis can occur at any time during the life span. It is more often found during the teenage years. About 2% to 3% of the general population have scoliosis. It occurs in males and females equally. She visited our clinic with severe back pain and with the fear of not being able to continue with the sport. Once we completed our Sports assesment we found out that she is diagnosed with scoliosis (few years back). She has been working with us since february 2022 with sports specific training combined with physiotherapy interventions.

From not being able to swim 200m at a stretch without getting affected by her pain, she worked her way with us where she went on to winning the 5km Sea swim and also was selected for the World Open Water Championships in Budapest, Hungary 2022.

All credit goes to our Physiotherapist who worked with her tirelessly in order to get her back to the sport and also for getting her back to representing the country.
