Money isn’t just numbers - it’s stress, pressure, and a constant weight on our minds. In today’s world, financial strain and mental health are more connected than ever.

In our ongoing “Money Matters” series on financial wellness, Yohann Gunatilleke shares his perspective on how our emotional well-being is shaped by the way we experience and manage money. With his background in finance and business intelligence, he breaks down why this link matters and how understanding it can empower us to handle our finances more mindfully.

Sri Lanka has been through a series of crises, from the pandemic to fuel shortages and an economic collapse.

These events caused drastic changes in how we live and our outlook on life, severely impacting people nationwide. As much as it is important to address the visible shifts, we must also pay attention to the less visible consequences of these crises had – and continue to have – on our mental health. Depression, stress, anxiety, and isolation are at an all-time high, which are all detrimental to our well-being.

As a community, let’s come together to look inward, acknowledge the effects of what we’ve been through, and support one another to build resilience, community, empathy and persevere towards mental well-being.

In every crisis, connection becomes our lifeline.

When we reach out - to friends, family, neighbors, or community groups - our brains and bodies respond. Stress hormones drop, oxytocin rises, and we feel safer, calmer, more human again.

Community isn’t just emotional support - it’s biology, resilience, and collective healing in action.

At Kalyana Sri Lanka, we believe that care begins with connection.
If you or your organization provide community support through mental health programs, relief work, or emotional care, we’d love to feature your efforts.

Tag your organization or send us a message to connect. Together, we can move from crisis to care.
