Are we underutilising ultrasound in advanced wound care nursing?
A new scoping review in the Journal of Wound Management explores the potential of ultrasound as a tool for assessing and managing complex chronic wounds.
🔍 What did the review find?
🔹Ultrasound detects subclinical damage, offering detailed, real-time insight that traditional visual assessments miss
🔹It’s especially effective in the diagnosis and prevention of pressure ulcers
🔹Use by nurses remains limited, largely due to a lack of training, accessibility to equipment, and standardised protocols
🔹Most evidence is hospital-based, with a noticeable lack of research in home care settings
Ultrasound offers real-time data that improves diagnosis and supports evidence-based care. For advanced practice nurses, it presents an opportunity to expand their role in wound management; however, this requires specialised training, clear protocols, and further research in diverse settings.
