Story of Directorate of Non-Communicable Diseases, Ministry of Health
While the pandemic of NCDs engulfs financial and non-financial resources of countries of the globe, with major effect on the economically developing nations like Sri Lanka, the Directorate of NCD has been striving to prevent and control these diseases in Sri Lanka since its inception in 1998.
The ‘National Policy and Strategic Frame work for prevention and Control of Non-Communicable Diseases’ was launched in 2010, with the vision of ‘A country that is not burdened with chronic non-communicable diseases, deaths and disabilities’, thereby addressing the burden of NCD through timely interventions.
Since the establishment of the NCD Bureau in 2017, the team of the Directorate of NCD functions under the guidance of the Deputy Director General of Non-Communicable Diseases, Consultant Community Physician, Dr. Champika Wickramasinghe.
With the current leadership by the Director, Consultant Community Physician, Dr. Vindya Kumarapeli, the team of the Directorate consisting of over twenty medical and non-medical health staff functions across several units headed by five Consultant Community Physicians.
