International Water Day
Today, March 22, is the International Water Day which focuses on the importance of fresh water as well as the need for increasing access to safe water for the entire globe. Declared in 1993, this day is devoted to support the UN's Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 6: Water and Sanitation for all by 2030. There is no doubt that we all are already facing a critical issue that prevails globally with regard to fresh and clean water. It is in such a context that we at Access decided to raise your awareness regarding the International Water Day to urge you to protect water not only for us but also for the future generations.
The idea of this day was born in 1992 at the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development which was held in Rio de Janeiro. In the same year, the United Nations General Assembly declared March 22 as the International World Day starting from 1993, followed by various celebrations and events.
The global situation of safe water is not positive at all. According to the estimates, 2.2 billion people accounting for 30% of the world’s population lack safe water at home while 1.98 billion people do not have even basic water services at their healthcare facilities. This clearly describes the severity of the issue.
We, Sri Lankans, are a nation with a highly advanced water-engineering culture which was one of the most fundamental factors that empowered our population from far-historic times. Water could not be detached from the lives of our ancestors since it was related to almost every aspect of their lives. Their expertise in building innovative tanks and canals amazed the whole world due to the incomparable water technologies they adopted.
Given the strong relationship we have built with water since the beginning of Sri Lankan civilization, we have a responsibility to preserve water not only for humans, but also for all animals as well as the natural environment in general. No sustainability objective could be achieved without paying key attention to this aspect.
Hence, we at Access, urge all of you around the globe to be more serious about water in order to keep hopes for future generations!
