🌊🐟 World Fisheries Day 2024 🌍
Celebrated every November 21, this day highlights the critical role of sustainable fisheries in supporting global food security, marine ecosystems, and the livelihoods of millions worldwide. 🌏✨

This year’s theme, “Let the waters bring forth swarms of living creatures”, calls for collective action to protect our oceans and embrace eco-friendly fishing practices. 🌿💙

🔑 Key Highlights:

🌱 Sustainable fishing to preserve marine biodiversity.
💼 Empowering small-scale fishers, who make up 90% of the global fishing community.
🍽️ Ensuring food security for billions who rely on fish for essential nutrition.
🚨 Addressing overfishing, pollution, and climate impacts.

Oceanpick is proud to host an awareness program with key partners, focusing on illegal fishing, boating safety, and biosecurity to support our fisheries community. Together, we strive for a sustainable future. 💙

Fishing as one of humanity’s oldest professions, which has been profoundly altered in recent years. Modern fishing has drifted towards “predatory practices and technology” that undermines sustainable practices. This imbalance has taken a toll on the marine ecosystem and the communities that de...

🌿MANGROVE PLANTING AT CHINABAY, TRINCOMALEE🌿

As part of our ongoing efforts to engage in climate action, Oceanpick with the collaboration of Marine Environment Protection Authority (MEPA) successfully initiated a Mangrove planting programme at Chinabay Trincomalee on the 29th July. We are thankful to the community of Trincomalee, Sri Lanka Coast Guard, Director Planning of Town and Gravets Divisional Secretariat, Assistant Director Fisheries, Cod Bay Harbor Manager, Forest Department, the Sri Lankan Police and School students and teachers who participated for this event and made it a success. Planting of 300 mangrove plants as a pilot project was initiated, and the success of this pilot would stem similar mangrove planting programmes. Mangroves are not only a great carbon sink but are highly beneficial to coastal communities.
A remarkable fact: mangrove shields 15 million people from coastal flood and storm surges!

The program on the 29th included an educational session as well to raise awareness about the importance of this humble nature ninja in the ecosystem and ocean welfare. Oceanpick also partnered with Trinco MEPA to continue this initiative, with a focus on planting more mangroves and monitoring the areas to ensure these new plants thrive. 🌱🌊

The world needs mangroves. However, like many other tree species, mangroves are at risk and some estimate approximately 1% of our mangroves are lost yearly posing a major threat to coastline communities. Mangrove conservation and restoration projects are important to protect our coastlines, keep our beaches beautiful and restore biodiversity in marine ecosystems. 🌿🛡️

Today, we mark “World Mangrove Day”!

Which is a reminder of the important role of mangroves in preserving healthy eco systems. It is a true nature ninja, boasting numerous benefits and protection to our blue planet. Mangroves are extraordinary eco systems and globally rare, and rich in biodiversity.

Managing and restoring mangrove eco systems is cost effective and nature-based solution in helping to ensure food security to many coastal communities, reduce coastal erosion, absorbing storm surge impacts during extreme weather events and they help combat climate change. Globally, mangroves are at a high risk of being destroyed altogether. Overall, mangroves are disappearing 3 to 5 times faster than global forest losses. Thus, it is paramount to conserve the mangrove ecosystem.

In 2015, Sri Lanka made history by becoming the first country worldwide to legally protect all remaining mangrove forests, and its mangrove restoration initiative has been named a World Restoration Flagship by the United Nations. Sri Lanka’s is on an ambitious journey of restoring 10,000 hectares of mangroves by 2030.

Every year on July 26th the world celebrates World Mangrove Day. This year it aims to raise awareness about the crucial mangrove ecosystem, to promote the conservation and sustainable growth of mangrove forests. Overall, mangroves are disappearing 3 to 5 times faster than global forest losses. Thus,...

Environmental Stewardship, Community Engagement, and Sustainable Practices have been the three pillars of Oceanpick’s worldview. And now, we’ve got the badge to prove it.

This month, the Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC), a nonprofit organization set up by the Worldwide Fund for Nature (WWF), gave us its official seal of approval.

“The ASC has some of the highest standards for aquaculture operations,” said Irfan Thassim, founder of Oceanpick, on hearing the news. “Achieving these has always been our goal, and being recognized for it has been a dream. Our team has been dedicated to producing supreme, yet sustainable, seafood, so this is a phenomenal milestone for us, and a validation of the trust our customers and partners have had in us over the years.”
