Why Is Fucoidan Attracting Attention as One of the Notable Auxiliary Medical Treatments? Fucoidan is a type of water-soluble dietary fiber and is an unctuous ingredient found primarily in mozoku (cladosiphon decipiens), kelp, mekabu (sporophyll of sea mustard) and other similar sea vegetation. A component in seaweed helps protect the body in various ways, creating a barrier and ebbing moisture to
prevent the pe*******on of bacteria. This chemical component is a polysaccharide called "sulphation fucose". At the 55th Japan Cancer Academic Society General Meeting held in 1996, the component fucoidan was reported to have anti-cancer properties, attracting immediate attention. The Mechanism of Cancer Treatment Using Fucoidan
In regard to the medical mechanism of “fucoidan", there are still many areas which are not clear, though current research in the field continues to advance. However, clinically, the number of studies reporting progress in many areas has risen. Currently, the central general theory concerning how fucoidan fights cancer is in its triggering cancer cell "apoptosis", a process where cancer cells literally “commit suicide”. As stated earlier, the human body is composed of approximately 60 trillion cells, and in accordance with the process of cell regeneration, new cells are constantly replacing dying cells, thus maintaining this balance of 60 trillion or so of cells. In an opposite manner, the phenomenon in which a cell causes itself to self-destruct is called the "apoptosis phenomenon". To cite similar phenomena, think of how tadpoles lose their tails as they mature, or of how a human baby at birth shows no signs of the webbing once joining its fingers while still just an embryo in its mother’s womb. Apart from this balance maintenance capability of healthy cells, we should also take note of cells which are not only able to regenerate, but also to continue increasing in number -- cancer cells. A continued increase in the number of cancer cells facilitates its spread, eventually resulting in the body falling victim to cancer. The substance which, in fact, is capable of halting this increase by forcing cancer cells to the self-destructive process of apoptosis before the body falls prey is “fucoidan”.
