Ringworm (medical name: tinea) is a fungal infection of the skin, hair, or nails. It forms a red, circular, itchy rash that looks like a ring — which is why the name “ringworm” is used, but no worm is involved. Ringworm is caused by a group of fungi called dermatophytes.
The infection occurs when fungal spores get onto your skin, especially in warm, moist areas.
Risk factors include:
• Excess sweating
• Poor hygiene
• Tight or unclean clothing
• Sharing personal items
• Weak immune system
• Having pets (especially cats and dogs)
Common Signs and Symptoms
On skin (body):
• Red, circular rash with raised, scaly edges
• Center may look clear, giving a “ring” appearance

• Slowly growing patches
On scalp: scaly patches, hair loss patches, itching
On feet (athlete’s foot): itching and burning, cracked skin between toes, peeling or blisters
On groin (jock itch): red itchy rash on inner thighs, burning sensation
On nails: thick, brittle, yellowish nails | crumbling edges

Skin contacts with an infected person.
Animal-to-human -Cats, dogs, cows, rabbits and other animals can carry it.
Sharing items: towels, clothing, bedding, combs, razors
