Here’s a quick breakdown of what you’re watching.

Of course, the best way to level up your surfing is by joining one of our courses - but here are a few tips to get you thinking about what’s really needed to catch a wave.

Why do we look at the highest point of the wave - the “peak”?
Because that’s where we decide if we should move toward it, sit and wait, spin, or go for the wave from where we are.

Why keep your eyes on the wave?
Staying connected helps you make better, quicker decisions. The wave is constantly changing, and your reactions need to match it.

Why check the whole face of the wave?
One big reason is so you know exactly where to look next.

Why not look too far down the line?
This part gets tricky. Scanning different points on the wave is important, but focusing on what’s close to you gives you a much better sense of your takeoff timing.

💡 Tips & Tricks to Keep Progressing!
Check out this mini analysis by Dan, our coach at Surf School Sri Lanka, from the end of the 2024 season. Watch closely as he breaks down how he rode this wave to the finish:

- Shifting the back foot to find the pad, loosening the board, and allowing more pivot from the tail on turns.
- Using vision on the takeoff to plan the ride ahead.
- Arms in a T-shape to open the chest towards the lip before the top turn, while keeping weight on the back leg to maximize the turn.
- Inverting the back knee to release pressure off the board, keeping speed and flow smooth.
