Subha Aluth Avurudak Wewa!
Puthantu Vaztukal!
A very happy Singhalese and Tamil new Year from the team at Lawrence Hill!
Last year it was not really possible to celebrate due to the lockdown, but this year everyone has invested in fireworks to start the New Year off with a bang!
As always there are many rituals to be observed in the next few days to make sure that the year gets off to a good start. This is always a very lovely, colourful and exciting time of the year.

nfuse your Christmas baking with a little Ayurveda by adding a pinch of cinnamon or cardamom, or even both. Your taste buds will be intrigued and delighted and so will your body.
According to Ayurveda, cardamom is an important spice, which is tridoshic which means that helps in balancing all the three. It has significant warming properties that are soothing for your body and its detoxifying effect helps to reduce toxins (called ama in Ayurveda). Cardamom reduces Kapha in the stomach and lungs (such as congestion and mucous) and pacifies Vata, which when out of balance can lead to anxiety.
Cinnamon has a tantalising scent that reminds us of Christmas and so its perfect to spice up Christmas baking. It is also one of the Ayurvedic All-round talents as it is also tridoshic and helps lower cholesterol levels, manages blood sugar levels, improves colds and coughs, and enhances skin health.

A pinch of cinnamon is also delicious in a cup of black tea and an oriental coffee with cinnamon and cardamom is truly scrumptious.

Today we are celebrating Il Poya Day, the November full moon day, which honours the first contingent of 60 disciples, sent out by Gautama Buddha to preach the Dhamma.
Ill is also the last day of the Katina pinkama, the season of giving the monks, who went into retreat for the rainy season, new robes.
We hope all our friends back home are enjoying a calm and cosy first advent Sunday.

Today we are celebrating Vap Poya Day. The monks traditionally receive new robes on this day, as they come out of their Monsoon retreat. It will be another quiet and contemplative Full Moon day in Sri Lanka this year. You are all in our thoughts. Stay well and stay blessed!

The best advice for these difficult times: Stay safe and healthy, eat well, and practice yoga and meditation!
Here are some asanas for your back. Please remember to check your posture; root your sit bones, hold the crown of head high and level and breathe deeply into your belly to elongate your spine.
Many thanks to for the inspiration.

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day and should be rich in minerals and vitamins to give you strength and energy for the day ahead. Delicious and nutritious ayurvedic porridge is the perfect start to the day.

Ayurvedic Porridge

Ingredients:

1 1/2 cup Rolled oats or instant oats, quinoa and amaranth
3 tbsp Ghee or coconut oil
5 pitted dates (optional)
1/2 cup Almonds
1/4 tsp Cinnamon
1/4 tsp Turmeric powder
1/8 tsp Black pepper
2 cup Water (2-3 cups boiling water)
1/2 cup Coconut milk
1 tbsp Maple syrup, honey or kithul treacle (palm sirup)

Instructions:

Grind the grains in a food processor.
Heat the ghee or coconut oil on low heat until bubbles start forming. Add the turmeric and black pepper.
Add the grains and cinnamon. Fry in ghee for about 5 minutes or until golden.
Boil water.
Add almonds and dates and fry together with the grains for 2-3 minutes.
Add the hot water and stir well. Add the coconut milk.
Lower the temperature and let cook for 30 mins. If you don’t have so much time in the morning, you can use instant oats instead of rolled oats. This reduces the cooking time to 5-10 minutes.

Optional toppings:

Shredded coconut, pecans, walnuts, pumpkin seeds, ground flax, apples, bananas, mangoes or berries

Toppings according to dosha.

Vata pacifying foods:

Ripe bananas, mango, berries, cinnamon, almonds, honey, ginger

Pitta pacifying foods:

Apples, mango, berries, coconut, pumpkin seeds, ground flax, maple syrup

Kapha pacifying foods:

Ripe bananas, almonds, cashews, coconut, walnuts, pumpkin seeds

Today Sri Lanka is celebrating Binara Poya day. The Full Moon in Septembers commemorates the establishment of the first order of Buddhist nuns or bhikkuni; the very first ordained bhikkuni being the stepmother of Buddha, Mahapajapathi Gothami. After the heavy rains this afternoon in Hikkaduwa, people are now preparing to go to temple at sundown and pray. One
of our biggest wishes at the moment is that the airport will reopen soon.

Today we are celebrating Nikini Poya Day, the August Full Moon Festival.
Nikini Poya day celebrates the first ever Dhammasangayana - The First Buddhist Council. Its objective was to preserve the Buddha's sayings (suttas), and to establish the monastic discipline or rules. This took place at the Sattapanni Rock Cave in Rajagaha, under the patronage of Mahākāśyapa, and it went on for seven long months.
Many Sri Lankans are enjoying the last day of a long weekend today and the country is preparing itself for the elections on the fifth of August.
