Heartfelt Appreciation from VOICE, Center for Speech and Language Pathology

A big, warm thank you to all our wonderful kids at VOICE and to their amazing siblings for joining us in creating a beautiful mock inclusive classroom setting for our shadow teacher trainees. Your presence, energy, and enthusiasm brought the space to life and gave our trainees truly meaningful hands-on learning experiences.
We are deeply grateful to the parents who took the time, made the effort, and trusted us enough to bring their children for this event. Your support makes our vision for inclusive, compassionate education possible.
Together, we are building a community where every child is valued, every learning moment is celebrated, and every future shadow teacher is inspired by real voices.
Thank you for being the heart of VOICE.

Honoring Our Stuttering Community at VOICE, Center for Speech and Language Pathology
From childhood to adulthood, people who stutter often face challenges such as fear of speaking, avoiding situations, feeling misunderstood, and carrying emotional stress around communication. Speech therapy helps ease this journey through building confidence, reducing tension, and supporting stuttering-affirming mindsets like:
“I can communicate effectively, even if I stutter.”
“Stuttering is a part of me, not a weakness.”
Today, we highlight and deeply appreciate the children, adolescents, and adults who stutter who willingly supported the Speech Therapy students of the Department of Disability Studies, Faculty of Medicine, University of Kelaniya.
Your openness, time, and trust have given these future Speech and Language Therapists invaluable hands-on experience.
Your support strengthens their skills.
Thank you for helping shape the next generation of compassionate professionals.

Student Testimonies – Certificate Course in Shadow Teaching -2025
We are proud to share the heartfelt reflections of few of our participants who successfully completed the Certificate Course in Shadow Teaching. Their words capture the growth, inspiration, and meaningful learning that took place throughout the programme.
Each testimony is a reminder of the passion and dedication our trainees bring to creating inclusive classrooms where every child is supported to reach their fullest potential.

In this program, a variety of approaches are utilized to ensure every child’s success in a wide array of social situations. Our focus is for the children to become more aware of their bodies, their environment, and those around them while incorporating socialization, which are the essential stepping stones in learning the skills needed for one to be successful with their peers. Overall themes are used to make learning social skills fun, exciting, and memorable for the children to help them generalize what they are learning in groups into their home, school, and community. This group is for any student who struggles in social situations, is having difficulty making and sustaining friendships, and wants to learn/ enhance social skills. Each day we incorporate small lessons and activities (i.e. role playing, arts and crafts, books, music, social skills videos, video clips of themselves, cooperative games, etc.) to meet the overall daily goal of socially appropriate behavior.
The topics that are addressed and incorporated into our group include, but are not limited to:
• Non-verbal language: Eye Contact, Body Talk, Voice Modulation, Body Awareness, & Personal Space. Reading Social Cues
• Emotions: Understanding Facial Expressions, Feelings, and How to Respond
• Developing Conversation / Listening Skills: Greetings, Initiating Conversations, Answering Questions, Reciprocal Language, Topic Circle & Space Shuttle (Topic Maintenance), Body Talk, & Brave Talk
• Being a Good Sport: Self-Control, Frustration Tolerance, Impulse Control, Team Work, Playing Fair, Waiting, Taking Turns, & Sharing
• Getting and Staying in the Game / Taking Part and Attending to Peer or Adult Directed Activities
• Conflict Resolution & Problem Solving
• Thinking of Others, Helping Friends, Doing Your Part, & Manners
• Imaginative / Pretend Play & Play
