"More than twenty months after the appalling terror attack on 7 October 2023, the conflict in Gaza continues to shock and sadden us all. Hunger, displacement and violence are blighting the lives of millions of Gazan men, women and children.
The brave and dedicated staff of the St John Eye Hospital Group are among those millions, and they still continue to provide vital eye care and wider medical support to people in need. Since the start of the conflict, they have provided life-changing surgery and care to more than 45,000 patients regardless of religion, race or ability to pay. In May, they were able to re-establish out-patient services at the damaged St John Eye Hospital in Gaza City.
Their commitment is inspiring, and I call on everyone involved to respect their right and that of all medical professionals in conflict zones to operate in safety. Eye Hospital staff cannot continue to serve their community without access to vital medical supplies, currently being prevented from reaching them.
It is time for the war to end, and for Gazans to be able to live in the peace and security which is the right of everyone on this planet."
