“Friend Visaka, pleasant feeling is pleasant when it persists and painful when it changes. Painful feeling is painful when it persists and pleasant when it changes. Neither-painful-nor-pleasant feeling is pleasant when there is knowledge [of it] and painful when there is no knowledge [of it].”

Bhikkhuni Dhammadinna, an arahant, declared by the Buddha as the foremost nun in teaching, answers layman Visaka when he asks about the characteristics of the three feelings. (Culavedalla Sutta MN 44)

Below is a mural of Bhikkhuni Dhammadinna advising a laywoman, found in the temple Wat Pho, Bangkok, Thailand.

"What should be done for his disciples out of compassion by a Teacher who seeks their welfare and has compassion for them, that I have done for you.
There are these roots of trees, these are empty huts.
Meditate, O Monks! Do not delay, or else you will regret it later.
This is my instruction to you."

The 90 day vassa (Rains retreat) began on Esala Poya (July 10). This encouragement to practice is found in many teachings given by the Buddha (e.g. MN19, MN 152, SN 43.12)

Traditionally this is a time where monastics stop travelling, come together and spend the retreat deepening their practice and understanding of the Dhamma. We wish everyone a fruitful 3 months of practice.

Paramita has several resident Grizzled Giant Squirrels (Ratufa macroura). They are the size of a small cat, quite shy, but fun to watch as they forage among the trees. They have bushy tails that are as long as their bodies. They are actually the smallest of the giant squirrels, and are found in Sri Lanka and the Indian sub-continent.

Monastics and staff at Paramita were very happy to support a drinking water project at Sri Gangaramaya, in the village of Medaoya, Mahiyanganaya. We thank the kind donors who donated the filter system and water tanks. This project was also supported by numerous donors who contributed time and money for the construction of the well, and housing for the filters, plumbing etc. We are very grateful that the villagers of Medaoya will now have clean drinking water that will be good for their health.

This year we had our Dan Sala on 20 June 2024. It's traditionally an offering from a temple to feed those who are coming back or going to the temple, but really we welcome anyone who is just passing by! This year we offered kanda. Many thanks to all who stopped by to partake of our little offering and may you all be well and healthy.
