A synopsis of the What,why,who,where,when & the how of Meditation
By Sanjay Hathiramani.
The history dates back to 5000 years b.c.In this fast pace world we live in,it is imperative to sit in silence to understand what is going on.
The What:
The word is derived from the Latin words Meditari/Medeor.
Meditari means to Think,reflect upon,consider,ponder.
Medeor on the other hand is,
I heal,cure,remedy,amend,correct,relieve,am good for or against a disease.
The Why:
As it gives you a sense of calm,peace and balance that can benefit both your emotional well-being and your overall health.
You are not trying to achieve anything.
The Who;
It used to be that in the past it had religious ties in ancient Egypt & China,as well as Judaism,Hinduism, Jainism,Sikhism & Buddhism.Nowadays most people who want an understanding of their lives take to it or those who want an "Inner Peace.
Most Yoga practitioners in their practice do so at the end.I.e.Sharvasana…the co**se pose.Where one goes into Yogic sleep.This is the most profound of all postures as it reaps the following;
Calms central nervous system,aiding the digestive and immune systems.
Calms the mind and reduces stress.
Reduces headache, fatigue and anxiety.
Helps lower blood pressure.
Promotes spiritual awakening and awareness of higher consciousness
The Where:
You don't need to go for a retreat,to an institution or a meditation centre.It is best practiced at home.For those who find it difficult can do so,irrespective of religion.
The When:
The best time of day suggested is the wee hours of the morning before dawn.The next best time is,on waking up.
If you have to get out of bed to wash your face,use the toilet or have some water,do so.Then you find a comfortable position to sit or recline horizontally.
The How:
1) Take a seat. Find a place to sit that feels calm and quiet to you.
2) Set a time limit if you have to.....
3) Notice your body.....
4) Feel your breath.....
5) Notice when your mind has wandered.....
6) Be kind to your wandering mind.....
7) Close with kindness.
That's it!
I'd say in simple words: Just subdue (overcome,quieten,bring under control)
the mind.
