The triceps brachii is the large muscle located at the back of the upper arm and is primarily responsible for elbow extension, the movement that straightens the arm. It also plays an important supporting role in shoulder stability and pushing activities such as lifting, reaching, pushing doors, transferring body weight, or performing sports movements.

Anatomically, the triceps has three separate heads, which is why it is called triceps:

๐Ÿ”น Long Head โ€“ originates from the infraglenoid tubercle of the scapula and crosses both the shoulder and elbow joints, assisting with shoulder extension and arm stabilization.
๐Ÿ”น Lateral Head โ€“ originates from the posterior surface of the humerus and is highly active during forceful pushing movements.
๐Ÿ”น Medial Head โ€“ lies deeper beneath the other two heads and provides continuous support during all elbow extension activities.

All three heads merge into a common tendon that inserts onto the olecranon process of the ulna, allowing the muscle to effectively straighten the elbow.
