Various stages of spinal disc changes and degeneration. At the top, a normal disc is shown with healthy spacing and cushioning between vertebrae. A degenerated disc appears darker and flattened, indicating early wear and tear, often due to aging. A bulging disc pushes outward but the outer layer remains intact, which may press on nearby nerves. A herniated disc occurs when the inner gel-like material breaks through the outer layer, often causing nerve compression and pain. A thinning disc has lost height and hydration, leading to reduced cushioning and possible instability. Disc degeneration with osteophyte formation shows advanced breakdown of the disc along with the growth of bone spurs (osteophytes), which may irritate surrounding nerves and tissues. These changes are commonly associated with chronic back pain and conditions such as degenerative disc disease or spinal arthritis.
