Soulink Lanka Soulink Lanka is an Organisation hanlding Childrren with Disability, Community Rehabilitation and Motivational Training Ms. It was not an easy journey.

SOULINK LANKA COMMUNITY BASED REHABILITATION CENTRE GALHINNA & MATALE (CENTRAL PROVINCE)
PREAMBLE
Disabled children are another group who face exclusion and various discrimination. It is common among those who are mentally retarded. Such children have very few options related to inclusive education and special education which could make a huge difference to their development. There is a lack of such schools and facilities, as well as trained teachers. There are so many such children scattered over Sri Lanka. The Parents of such children sometimes keep these children hidden inside their homes due to the feelings of low esteem. It should be a priority of everyone concerned to highlight the needs of such children. OBJECTIVES
The vision behind this Project is.
• To remove the stigma of the society towards these disabled children and their families.
• To eliminate the low esteem of the parents of these children.
• To socialize them so that the society accepts them as an equal part.
• To rehabilitate, train and empower them to stand on their feet and stand tall.
• To train teachers and parents to handle such children. CENTRE AT GALHINNA
It was the hard work and struggle of a single lady which gave birth to a Centre at Udatalawinna and Galhinna which are situated a few kilometers off the Hill Capital Kandy. Ummi Yousuf (Roohma Abdeen) the lady instrumental for initiating this Centre with all the goodwill. This was due to her passion towards such children and, as she wanted to bring light to the lives of these unprivileged souls. There are so many such Muslim villages particularly in the Central Province, which has a big demand for such Centres for children with special needs. As most Muslims parents are themselves poor and not educated, rehabilitation programs are conducted for them too. It was such conviction that led her to start an Organisation named Soulink Lanka in partnership with Br. Rhumy Amith, who is a tower of strength to her, and two such Centres were started, one at Udatalawinna and the other at Galhinna. She had to study for her Diploma in ‘Special Education and Disability’ and also obtained a Diploma in Childhood and Pre-school Concept, to gain competency to handle such children. She also has a Diploma for Psychology and Counseling at the Peradeniya University. She had to single handedly walk that extra mile to commence this Centre. Finally, her dream was fulfilled one year ago when the Centre for Disabled Children commenced at a Montessori at Udatalawinna and at No.245, Kandy Road, Galhinna. Unfortunately, due to unforeseen circumstance the Centre at Udatalawinna remains closed at this moment after about 8 months of running. This Centre had 25 children upto 18 years. At the Galhinna Centre for Disabled Children, which has all Muslim children, teachers are specially trained to handle such children as Ms. Ummi Yousuf and Mr. Sanjeeva are qualified trainers. At the moment there are 12 children aged from 6 to 20 years with 3 teachers and one supervisor / trainer / psychotherapist. This Centre too is running at minimal costs and since there is greater demand for inclusion of children from surrounding areas, Alhamdulillah, we were able to move to a bigger place from January 2012, with some help. With the costs spiraling and most parents are on the poorer side, the Centre finds it difficult to cater to the needs of the village. We therefore humbly requests assistance from prospective donors. The earlier Centre which was a two roomed house is now shifted to a much comfortable location, Alhamdulillah. CENTRE AT MATALE
Masha Allah, a new Centre to handle children with Down Syndrome was initiated at Matale at 104/6 Dola Road. This was due to a great demand from the area. At present, there are 8 children who took admission during the last 4 month existence. 4 teachers get about the different functions assigned to them. Many requests for admissions are made regularly. There is also many requests to start classes for slow learners too. And due to this we have already started a class for slow learners (children with dyslexia and dyscalculia, etc)
At the moment we need furniture in the form of tables and chairs for children and toys and related equipments. We will appreciate so much if a sponsor could volunteer. Additionally we will need even small funding on regulars basis to meet administrative costs, as cost of living has skyrocketed. MANAGEMENT
The members of the Management of Soulink Lanka, regularly attends seminars and workshops on psychology, handling children with special needs and disability and related themes to keep themselves updated of the latest knowledge about such children and their needs. Soulink Lanka has therefore developed some awareness of the activities among these reputed Organisations. Actually there is big demand for a Centre or School for special needs children even in Colombo and other leading places. That is another factor altogether. We have espoused the need in schools to have at least one class room for such children. We may be able to train teachers to handle such children. You could visit this centre and speak to the parents, to obtain firsthand information of the improvement of their children during the past year. Additionally, we have organized many events to enlighten women on the need to have better families and positive parenting and also home based employment projects. Many counseling courses were conducted for females, in Matale and Galhinna. You may log on to www.soulinklanka.com or contact us on soulinklank@gmail.com

It will be shocking to learn that the first Mental Health Hospitals were built by Muslims and a holistic method of treatment was administered methodically. CLINICAL STUDY FIELD TRIP TO NIMH MULLERIYAWA HOSPITAL

It was a Red-Letter Day for all those who participated on this unique and memorable tour, including two BSc students from other Campuses who made prior request to join us. We had difficulty in obtaining approval from the Ministry of Health as it is a sensitive place. After several efforts and person visits and discussions this was ultimate made possible. We contributed and made arrangement to serve Sago porridge to the inmates of Both Unit 1 and Unit 2 hospitals (i.e. Angoda and Mulleriyawa)

I know that some of those who made it had so many other important engagements and they gave first priority to the visit. Our students behaved well and asked as many questions as possible from all those experts from different wards. There were humour moments too and it was fun. We arrived at the NIMH at 9.15 and finished by 3.00 afternoon. Special appreciation to Sharunya who took the 3 am bus from Bogawatalawa and Madushani who came from a distant area in Galle.

The Seniormost Nurse Ms. Piumi took us on a very nice journey of what mental health and the history of it along with how the Mulleriyawa Hosptial started and what it is now. The services rendered by the hospital and the staff were unbelievable fantastic with so much facility than we could imagine. The setting with natural gardening and greenery were soothing to feel.

The excursion took us to many places on this expansive and beautifully set compound of many hundreds of acres. Thanks to the Nurse who took us to all these useful places

It was a mini city to be honest, and some of which were taken:
• Wards for forensic suspects ordered by the Magistrate, Mr. Saman did a good explanation
• General wards for medium aged males
• General wards for medium aged females
• Wards for aged males and aged females over 60
• Wards for teenagers from 12 to 18
• Wards for drug addicts – isolation centre.
• Special wards for learning disability
• Special wards for Mothers accompanying children.
• Occupational Therapy and life skills training centre
• Horticultural (agriculture and gardening) area.
• Emergency call 1926 help centre dealing with emergency calls and chats (this is a unique concept which had nurses with computers attending to such activity), separate rooms to discuss individual issues too.
• ECT and Emergency Theater
• Nurses training centre – Thanks to Dr. Shasini (Director, Training) who made arrangements for us to have a get-together and refreshments at the Conference Room 2
• General overview of the entire complex from the reception counter.

Appreciation and thanks to every senior staff in-charge of each of the above departments who made explanations on the functions of these sections.

Finally, we request those who are affected with trauma or depression to get support from this hospital where everything is available free of charge. And, also please support the hospital for some of the needs, with whatever you can and get in touch with me for this purpose.
Special thanks to the Director, and all those who assisted us at the Hospital.

ISLAMIC MENTAL - PSYCHOSPIRITUAL APPROACH IN PSYCHOLOGY

Psychology is defined as the study of the human mind and behaviour. It is a relatively new discipline as we are taught, which came into being in the 18th Century in Europe and later found its stand in the USA. However, many of us are not aware that Islamic Mental Health (psychology) was originated by our Muslim scholars way back in the 8th Century, and, this present discovery has taken the world by storm. Most Muslims are not aware of these facts.
We at Heartwork Academy of Psychology have been doing much research in secular psychology since 2016 and began conducting the Diploma in Counselling and Psychotherapy. The reason is that many people showed interest in studying psychology and due to this demand, many Academies, Institutions and Campuses started teaching psychology as a subject. Nevertheless, psychotherapy was not heard and not known as being connected to counselling by the local community.

It was Heartwork Academy who filled this vacuum by commencing the Diploma course in Counselling and Psychotherapy in 2016, and we have competed almost 10 batches up to now. There is no counselling without psychotherapy and sadly in Sri Lanka authentic and orthodox lecturers and trainers in psychotherapy are very difficult to find. Alhamdulillah, with our students passing out this void has been patched up to a certain extent.

Our lecturer Dr. Rhumy Amith, has been in the Counselling and Psychotherapy arena since the Tsunami struck the island in 2004 and has worked in those areas to treat clients with PTSD, and therefore is the most senior person in this field at the moment. He was trained by world-famous psychologists such as Dr Ina Watson from the UK (during the Tsunami) and Dr Janet LeValley (during the LTTE war) and finally by Professor Ranawaka from Colombo University (who actually was responsible for the introduction of psychology in Sri Lanka in 1980s). Please log in to www.heartworkcolombo.com to see the credentials of Dr Rhumy Amith

Rhumy Sir did deep research in Islamic Mental Health with leads and connection with the newfound discovery in Islamic Psychology and Therapy in the USA, Canada, UK, India and Pakistan. And, therefore he has prepared an introductory syllabus to teach these to those keen to know about this discipline in Sri Lanka. Actually, it would be a shock to Muslims to know why it took so long to unearth these findings and present them. The original manuscripts of Islamic Psychology Scholars were in Arabic and therefore it was not known to the current psychology world. However, this discovery has now stunned the Western World and they have welcomed it with joy.

Islamic Mental Health is a holistic treatment and in this special course you would learn many new things and you would be proud of the heritage that we have inherited. This course covers the following:
• Islamic Psychology Vs. Secular Psychology
• History of Islamic Psychology & Perspectives
• Contribution of Early Islamic Scholars
• First Psychiatric Hospitals built by Muslims in the 9th Century
• The psycho-spiritual concept - Qalb, Rooh, Nafs & Aql
• Overcoming Anxiety based on the Sunnah
• Cognitive Reconstruction
• Understanding body language
• Islamic Concept of Counselling
• Islamic based Therapies
• Disorders and its causes
• And many more topics

The Diploma course will commence on 3rd July 2024 from 8.30 to 10 during the evenings and the Zoom presentation will be done only on Wednesdays for three months.

Jazaakumulla Khairan for your interest and we welcome you to participate in this wonderful journey of spirituality.

INDIVIDUAL COUNSELLING
Rhumy Amith, Heartwork Counselling Clinic

"You cannot have a promising picture of the future when your mind is full of parasites about the past"

People come to counselling because they are going through emotional difficulties such as depression, anxiety, harassment, grief, trauma, low self-esteem, guilt, interpersonal problems, stress reactions, and problems in living.

The bottom line is that they feel conflicted internally and in emotional pain. Although, oftentimes they attribute their pain to external factors, what they may not realise is that the deeper sources of their pain lie in psychological defences and disturbances formed in childhood. The very defences that help children to survive childhood pain become the problem in adult life by restricting people from looking for success in life and having close attachments. The clients themselves are not aware of this, and only a skilled counselling psychotherapist will be able to identify the issue. This is the reason why many such tintop counsellors fail. Most of our problems in life have a definite link to our childhood. To discover this and help find solutions is the primary task of an expert counselling psychotherapist.

The goal of counselling is to resolve emotional difficulties and make one healthier physically and psychologically. As a person becomes healthier, he becomes less conflicted internally, less, worried by imagined limitations, and more freer to pursue one's goals and to tolerate love. Individual counselling can assist you find inner peace and lifelong positive solutions for almost all your problems.

A thought-provoking story:
" Once Mulla Nasruddin was found searching for something under the street lights by his friend. The friend asked him what he was searching for. "The Keys" came the answer.

The friend also searched for some time, and then asked, "Where did you lose them"? "At home," said Mulla Nasruddin.

"Then, why do you search here instead of the home," asked the friend.

Mulla Nasruddin said, "Oh, it is bright here, that is why"

IMPORTANCE OF LOVE MAPS

Research has found that emotionally intelligent couples are intimately familiar with each other’s worlds. This is having a richly detailed Love Map: “the term for that part of your brain where you store all the personally important information about your partner’s life.”

These couples made plenty of cognitive room in their minds for their relationship. They remember the major events in each other’s histories, and they keep updating their information as the facts and feelings of their spouse’s world change. They know each other’s goals in life, worries, and dreams. Without such a love map, you can’t know your partner.

From knowledge springs not only love but the fortitude to weather marital storms. Couples who have detailed love maps of each other’s worlds are far better prepared to cope with stressful events and conflict.

How to build Love Maps

Start creating and strengthening your Love Maps today. Try to answer the following questions about each other and find out how much you know about your partner’s world.

Love Map Exercise:

• Name your partner’s two closest friends.
• What was your partner wearing when you first met?
• Name one of your partner’s hobbies.
• What stresses your partner right now?
• Describe in detail what your partner did today or yesterday.
• What is your partner’s fondest unrealized dream?
• What is one of your partner’s greatest fears or disaster scenarios?
• What is my favorite way to spend an evening?
• What is one of your partner’s favorite ways to be soothed?
• Name a person your partner dislikes.
• What is your partner’s ideal job?
• What medical problems does your partner worry about?

Asking these questions will help you develop greater personal insight and a more detailed “map” of each other’s lives and worlds. However, getting to know your partner better is an ongoing process, and an undoubtedly rewarding experience.

CONFRONTATION SKILLS IN COUNSELLING

A Client usually comes to meet a Counsellor with a confused mind. That’s obvious. Certain decisions taken in the past would have pushed them to a situation in which they are now unable to find their paths. They are presently in their traumatic trance.

One of the top skills that I as a professional Counsellor have practiced is ‘Confrontation’. If used skillfully, it can bring about immediate relief to the disjointed Client. As is understood in normal parlance, ‘Confrontation’ is not to have direct harsh conflict with the Client. Rather, it is as a more gentle skill that involves listening to the client carefully and respectfully; and, then, seeking to help the client examine self or situation more fully.’

Confrontation’ is not "going against" the client; it is "going with" the client, seeking clarification and the possibility of a creative "New", which enables them to find their own answers to the confusion. I have used this skill very tactfully and have had many successes in my counselling career.

Challenging illogical reasoning and irrational thoughts are a hallmark of counselling skills. How many counsellors know about this?

As thinking beings, most of the time, some decisions would landed them in unfavorable conditions. We need to question such decision to reason in which way are they experts or qualified to think that the decisions taken by them are correct.

The practice of professional counselling is not possible without those special magical moments which we create to bring about a sense of realization leading to a happy and fulfilled session for a Client.

At Heartwork Academy we train students to become professional and skilled counsellors who would shine and bring about the best version of them. Join us and see the difference.

HOW TO DEPOSIT IN THE EMOTIONAL BANK ACCOUNT

If you think you are in a shortfall with your partner or just want to make sure your emotional bank account is flourishing, the following are some ways to begin making deposits:

• Catch your partner doing something good: Notice what your partner does that you appreciate (even if it is something they do every day) and say thank you.

• Give your partner a compliment: The most impactful compliments are ones about who your partner is as a person. For example, “I really love and appreciate how thoughtful you are of others.”

• Respond positively to your partner’s bids: Make sure you find time on a daily basis to set aside distractions (e.g., phone, computer, TV, etc.) and be available to your partner.

• Do something nice for them: We all have opportunities throughout our day to do something kind for our partner. For example, make them coffee in the morning, empty the dishwasher, and help with cleaning. The options are endless.

• Show genuine interest in your partner and their world: Maintain curiosity about your partner and how their world may have changed recently. Then find some time to engage them and ask them questions. This can be as simple as, “How was your day today, honey?” Make them feel you care about their world.

• Show your partner physical affection: This could include a six-second kiss before you walk out the door, a hug after returning home, holding their hand while watching TV, or snuggling up next to them in bed.

• Spend quality time with them: Planning quality time with your partner sends the message that they are important. It allows dedicated space for the two of you to connect.

• Give them a gift: Let your partner know that you are thinking of them in a tangible way. This can be large or small; it doesn’t matter the cost. It’s just one way to let your partner know you care about them.

• Support them emotionally: We all have hard moments in life. When your partner reaches toward you to express some difficult emotions, make sure you listen to them and provide empathy and support.

Finding ways to fill your partner’s emotional bank account each day can help ensure that the negatives in the relationship don’t cause your relationship to dip into the red. The relationship will be able to weather the difficult times better, and it will keep you on track for maintaining a healthy, happy life together.
