Monkeypox is a rare viral infection in most of the world, so much so that clinicians in many countries can go their entire careers without seeing any cases. Yet a recent uptick in seemingly unconnected cases throughout Europe and North America has raised some warning signs about the potential for community spread. This is still being investigated, but for now, here are some basic facts about the virus.

What to Know About Monkeypox

How is monkeypox spread, and should we be worried about an outbreak? Monkeypox is a rare disease caused by a virus that is transmitted to humans from animals such as rodents and monkeys.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), this happens when a person comes in close contact with the blood, bodily fluids or lesions of infected animals.
