The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) is a state-run hospital functioning under the Ministry of Health. It is the largest tertiary care hospital for Psychiatry in Sri Lanka. Our mission is to put patients first. The institute plays an integral role in Sri Lanka by providing specialized psychiatric services to the community with professionalism and care, and is also the centre for mental health training and research in the country. Established in 1926, the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) has come a long way to become Sri Lanka’s largest tertiary care institution caring for the patients with mental illness. The Mental Hospital (Teaching),Angoda was upgraded to a National Institute in October 2008. Half Way Home, Mulleriyawa(HWHM) and the School of Nursing, Mulleriyawa are also under the administration of NIMH since 2008. The NIMH has a total of around 1500 beds including HWHM providing care for all types of mental illnesses. Annually over 8000 patients are admitted to NIMH and provides acute and intermediate care, as well as specialized services.

මේ සඳහා ජාතික මානසික සෞඛ්‍ය විද්‍යායතනයේ අධ්‍යක්ෂකතුමා ඇතුළු රෝහල් කාර්යය මණ්ඩලය සහභාගී වූ අතර, පාසල් ළමුන්ගේ මානසික සෞඛ්‍ය හා දරුවන් අතර පවතින මානසික රෝග පිළිබඳව විශේෂිත දේශනයක් ළමා හා යොවුන් මනස පිළිබඳ විශේෂඥ වෛද්‍ය සේනානි විජේතුංග මහත්මිය පවත්වන ලදී. විශේෂඥ වෛද්‍ය නෙත්මා පද්මකුමාර මහත්මිය විසින් පැවැත්වූ ජාතික මානසික සෞඛ්‍ය විද්‍යායතනයේ කාර්යභාරය හා පවතින සේවාවන් ගැන දේශනයටද පැමිණ සිටි පිරිසගේ විශේෂ අවධානය යොමුවිය.

A special workshop for Guidance Teachers of the Western Province was held on 05 February at the National Institute of Mental Health, in parallel with its Centenary celebrations.

The Director of NIMH and the hospital staff participated in the event. A special lecture on the mental health of school children and psychological issues among children was delivered by Consultant Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist Dr. Senani Wijetunge. In addition, Consultant Psychiatrist Dr. Nethma Padmakumara conducted an insightful session on the role and services of the National Institute of Mental Health, which drew keen attention from the participants

මානසික සෞඛ්‍ය සේවාලාභීන් රැකබලාගන්නන් සඳහා වන විශේෂ වැඩමුළුවක් අද දින (පෙබරවාරි 05) ජාතික මානසික සෞඛ්‍ය විද්‍යායතනයේදී පැවැත්විණ.

මෙහිදී මානසික රෝග සහිත පුද්ගලයන් රැකබලාගැනීම හා ඔවුන්ට පවතින උපකාරක සේවා පිලිබදව විශේෂඥ මනෝවෛද්‍යවරුන් විසින් විශේෂිත දේශන පවත්වන ලදී.

රැකබලාගන්නන් ප්‍රායෝගිකව මුහුණදෙන තත්ත්වයන් පිලිබඳව මෙහිදී සාකච්ඡාවට ලක්වූ අතර මේ සඳහා ජාතික මානසික සෞඛ්‍ය විද්‍යායතනයේ වෘත්තීය චිකිත්සකවරුන්, ප්‍රජා මනෝවෛද්‍ය හෙද නිලධාරීන් හා මනෝවෛද්‍ය සමාජ සේවා නිලධාරීන් සම්පත් දායකත්වය ලබාදෙන ලදී.

A special workshop for caregivers of mental health service consumers was successfully held today (05 February) at the National Institute of Mental Health.

The program brought together expert psychiatrists and multidisciplinary professionals to share knowledge, discuss real-life caregiving challenges, and strengthen support for those who care for loved ones with mental illness.

In parallel with the historic 100-year celebration of the National Institute of Mental Health, we proudly marked another milestone with the opening of our new Telemedicine Unit by the Hon. Deputy Minister of Health and Mass Media, Dr. Hansaka Wijemuni.

This initiative will strengthen consultant support to peripheral psychiatric units across Sri Lanka, bringing specialist care closer to communities and bridging gaps in mental health services.

The centenary milestone of the National Institute of Mental Health — the pioneer of mental health services in Sri Lanka — was proudly celebrated on 03 February 2026 at the NIMH premises.

The Hon. Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. The event was also attended by Dr. Hansaka Wijemuni, Deputy Minister of Health and Mass Media, Dr. Anil Jasinghe, Secretary to the Ministry of Health, along with senior ministry officials and many distinguished invitees.

දේශයේ මානසික සෞඛ්‍ය සේවාවේ පුරෝගාමියා වන ජාතික මානසික සෞඛ්‍ය විද්‍යායතනයේ සියවසක අභිමානය 2026 පෙබරවාරි 03 වන දින ජාතික මානසික සෞඛ්‍ය විද්‍යායතන පරිශ්‍රයේ දී අභිමානවත් ලෙස සමරන ලදී.
