Faculty of Medicine, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka The Faculty of Medicine of the University of Kelaniya is one of eight state medical schools in Sri Lanka.

The Faculty currently offers three undergraduate degree programmes for internal students: MBBS, BSc in Speech and Hearing Sciences (specializing in Speech & Language Therapy or in Audiology) and BSc Honours in Occupational Therapy. The first batch of students completed their five year course and graduated MBBS in September 1996. From 2004, the Faculty has adopted an organ-system based integrated curriculum. Today, the Faculty has approximately 1000 students on its roll. This includes several foreign students, mainly from other South Asian countries, who have been admitted on a fee levying basis. The Faculty also welcomes students for elective appointments and many students from medical schools in Europe, USA and Australia have spent their elective periods with us.

The newly renovated Faculty Canteen kitchen and entrance were opened for students on 26 January 2026, in the presence of the Dean, staff members, and student representatives.

This long-felt upgrade improves hygiene, food quality, and service, benefiting the many students who depend on the canteen for their daily meals. The renovation is part of our ongoing efforts to create a more comfortable, student-friendly, and vibrant campus environment.

We sincerely thank all staff and students who contributed to making this important project a reality.

For the third consecutive year the Kelaniya University Faculty of Medicine Teachersโ€™ Association (KUFMTA) organised a second-hand item sale on 19th December 2025.

Pre loved clothes, jewellery, shoes, bags, books and household items were donated by the staff members and displayed for purchase at the library basement. Students and staff purchased these items for low cost and all proceeds from the sale were directed to the โ€˜free food tagโ€™ system at the hostel canteen run by the KUFMTA.

The KUFMTA second hand item sale is expected to promote the culture of decluttering, sustainability and keep up the spirit of sharing and generosity during the Christmas season.
