Faculty of Medicine, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka The Faculty of Medicine of the University of Kelaniya is one of eight state medical schools in Sri Lanka.

The Faculty currently offers three undergraduate degree programmes for internal students: MBBS, BSc in Speech and Hearing Sciences (specializing in Speech & Language Therapy or in Audiology) and BSc Honours in Occupational Therapy. The first batch of students completed their five year course and graduated MBBS in September 1996. From 2004, the Faculty has adopted an organ-system based integrated curriculum. Today, the Faculty has approximately 1000 students on its roll. This includes several foreign students, mainly from other South Asian countries, who have been admitted on a fee levying basis. The Faculty also welcomes students for elective appointments and many students from medical schools in Europe, USA and Australia have spent their elective periods with us.

The Faculty of Medicine, University of Kelaniya, received a Merit Award of Commendation in the Environmentally Friendly Government Institution category at the Presidential Environmental Awards 2025.

In order to recognize and reward highly motivated students who show outstanding abilities in both the academic sphere and in extracurricular activities, the Faculty of Medicine, University of Kelaniya will offer the following three types of awards for recognition of outstanding students in the MBBS and BSc (Speech and Hearing Sciences) degree programmes.

Students will be named to The Deanโ€™s List purely on the basis of academic achievements, while the Faculty Awards will be made on consideration of both academic and extra-curricular achievements and the Extra-Curricular Award will be made on consideration of extra-curricular achievements.

The Faculty of Medicine, University of Kelaniya, proudly welcomed its 37th batch of MBBS students at a prestigious ceremony attended by the Vice-Chancellor, Senior Professor Nilanthi de Silva, the Dean, Senior Professor Madawa Chandratilake, the Guest Speaker Dr Ajith Arthanayake (Alumnus and Consultant Surgeon at CNTH), Heads of Departments, academic, executive, and non-academic staff.
