JFKMC Leads Prostate Cancer Awareness Walk & Free Screening on Sept. 27
The John F. Kennedy Medical Center (JFKMC), through its Department of Urology, will on Saturday, September 27, 2025, host a Prostate Cancer Awareness Walk from Invincible Park to the Ministerial Complex, followed by free health screenings. The event is part of World Prostate Cancer Awareness Month.
Globally, prostate cancer is the second most common cancer in men, with about 1.47 million new cases and 397,000 deaths each year (IARC, 2022). In Africa, it is reported as the leading cancer among men and a major cause of cancer deaths, with West Africa carrying some of the highest burdens due to late diagnosis and limited access to screening (IARC GLOBOCAN, 2022).
According to a presentation by JFKMC’s Department of Urology on Monday, September 8, 2025, between June 2024 and June 2025, the hospital tested 450 patients. Of these, 250 men presented with prostate-related symptoms, and 78% showed elevated PSA levels.
Highlighting the urgency of these findings, Dr. Linda A. Birch, CEO of JFKMC, announced that all men aged 40 and above visiting the hospital should undergo routine prostate-cancer screening and counseling.
Dr. Ayun K. Cassell III, a Liberian Urology Consultant, emphasized that early screening saves lives. He encouraged men to participate in the walk, take advantage of the free screening, and help break the stigma surrounding men’s health.
