Rising Youth Mentorship Initiative

This week, two of our staff joined other partner organizations from Sierra Leone, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), and Uganda for a Trauma and Children Training in Kenema, Sierra Leone, organized by our partner, medica mondiale e. V. .

The training is strengthening our team’s capacity to better support adolescent girls and young women affected by trauma, particularly in contexts of sexual and gender-based violence. It also provides a valuable platform for shared learning, exchange of experiences, and building stronger regional collaboration.

Through this engagement, RYMI continues to deepen its commitment to providing safe, survivor-centered, and trauma-informed services to adolescents girls, young women communities.

Yesterday, our Executive Director Shamella E. Matthews represented us at the Women Leadership Council Meeting in Monrovia, hosted by the Ellen Johnson Sirleaf Presidential Center for Women and Development.

Two things she captioned from former president Ellen Johnson Sirleaf that she takes along are:

1. You have to want it.(The change, the impact, the growth....)

2. Believe you can. 💪🏽

🚫 It’s a NO GO ZONE for R**e!

Today, young people rallied in protest, standing together to say NO to r**e and all forms of sexual violence. "Our voices are loud, and our message is clear": Liberia must be a safe place for women and girls.

We call on the Government of Liberia to listen and take decisive action to end r**e, protect survivors, and ensure justice for every victim.

Yesterday, December 4, 2025, Rising Youth Mentorship Initiative (RYMI) joined national stakeholders in Monrovia for the National Workshop on Adolescent Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (ASRHR) and Nutrition, organized by UNFPA Liberia

Held under the Joint UN–Government of Liberia Programme “Nurture, Empower and Protect (NEP)”, the workshop brought together Government officials, UN agencies, Development Partners, the NEP Technical Working Group, CSO and adolescents and youth representatives.

Participants reviewed preliminary findings, identified priority ASRHR and nutrition challenges, and contributed to shaping the Five-Year National Strategy on Adolescent SRHR and Nutrition.

RYMI is proud to support these collective efforts to empower and protect adolescents across Liberia.

Today, Rising Youth Mentorship Initiative stood alongside women’s rights organizations and Human Rights Defenders as we submitted a petition to the House of Representatives, through the Office of the Speaker, calling for the urgent passage of the Protection Act on Harmful Traditional Practices.

In solidarity, we raise our collective voice in this national advocacy. We reaffirm our commitment to safeguarding women and girls, strengthening accountability, and championing laws that uphold and protect human rights. We call on the Legislature to act swiftly and help build a Liberia where our cultural practices uplift, rather than harm.
