β€’ Soft Drinks and Depression Risk

New research shows that drinking more soft drinks is linked to a higher risk of major depressive disorder (MDD), especially in women. Women who drink them regularly are more likely to develop depression and have more severe symptoms.

Scientists believe this may be due to changes in the gut microbiome, particularly the rise of certain bacteria triggered by high sugar and artificial sweeteners.

One study found a 16.7% higher risk of MDD for heavy soft drink consumers.

Doctors suggest asking patients about soft drink habits during checkups and encouraging reduced intake not just for physical health, but also for mental well-being.
