PROSTATE CANCER MYTHS& FACTS:

4. MYTH: Prostate cancer is always curable

FACT: “When prostate cancer is diagnosed early, and the cancer is confined to the prostate, cure rates are high. However, when prostate cancer is diagnosed after it has spread beyond the prostate, then it’s more difficult to cure.”
In general, the sooner the cancer is detected and treated, the better the outcome.

PROSTATE CANCER MYTHS & FACTS:

3. MYTH: PSA testing is not beneficial.

FACT: The prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test is the best way to test for early-stage prostate cancer.
“There has recently been a lot of controversy surrounding the PSA test. Some believe that it has no benefit and may lead to uncomfortable biopsies. However, this is untrue. It is worthwhile for men to get a PSA in their 40s to determine if they are at risk of prostate cancer in their lifetime. If the PSA is less than one, then it is unlikely that they will have a significant risk for prostate cancer in the year to come.”

Younger men with a family history—a first-degree relative diagnosed with prostate cancer—should strongly consider getting a baseline PSA and getting PSA testing every three to four years. African-American men also have an increased risk of developing prostate cancer and should consider PSA testing at 40 or younger.

PROSTATE CANCER MYTHS & FACTS:

2. Myth: If I don’t feel a tumor, I don’t have prostate cancer.

FACT: Prostate cancers are highly asymptomatic: the symptoms vary widely from person to person and may be caused by several other conditions or disorders.

Increased need to urinate frequently
Difficulty starting or holding back urine
Painful or burning urination
Other urination issues
Difficulty achieving an er****on
Painful ej*******on
Blood in urine or semen

PROSTATE CANCER MYTHS & FACTS:

1. MYTH: Only elderly men get prostate cancer.

FACT: Many factors contribute to an increased risk for prostate cancers: family history, lifestyle, and overall health.
In general, the older you are, the more likely you are to develop prostate cancer.

Most prostate cancers are diagnosed in elderly men, and the median age of prostate cancer death is 80 years of age. “However, some men are diagnosed in their 40s with clinically significant prostate cancer, but this is uncommon.”

Lung Cancer Myths & Facts:

4. Myth: There isn’t a way to find lung cancer before it starts to cause symptoms.

Truth: Lung cancer screening is available and recommend for people at high risk for the disease.

Cancer screening exams are designed to find small tumors that haven’t started to spread or cause symptoms yet. The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommends lung cancer screening through an annual low-dose CT scan for people ages 50 to 80 who have a 20 pack-year smoking history and currently smoke or have quit within the last 15 years. Pack-year smoking history equals the number of packs of ci******es smoked per day multiplied by the number of years a person has smoked.

Lung Cancer Myths & Facts:

3. Myth: There’s nothing you can do for advanced lung cancer.

Truth: Effective treatments for advanced lung cancer are now available.

As the American Cancer Society recently reported, lung cancer survival has been increasing since 2009, and lung cancer death rates have fallen drastically over the last 30 years. Advances in treatment, including newly approved immunotherapy and targeted therapy medicines, have helped.

Lung cancer Myths & Facts:

2. Myth: If you’ve been diagnosed with lung cancer, there’s no point in quitting smoking now.

Truth: Quitting smoking after a lung cancer diagnosis can benefit your cancer treatment and recovery.

“A cancer patient who quits smoking at diagnosis can increase their probability of survival by 30% to 40%. If you quit smoking, you have a better chance of responding to cancer treatment than if you continue to smoke. It improves longevity and results in better quality of life.”

Lung Cancer Myths & Facts:

1. Myth: Only people who smoke get lung cancer.

Truth: Anyone can get lung cancer.

While it’s true that to***co use is the leading cause of lung cancer, people who have never smoked can also be diagnosed with lung cancer. In fact, about 20% of lung cancers deaths occur in people who have never smoked!

"Cervical cancer is the fourth most common cancer among women in the world with estimated 570 000 new cases and of those 311 000 deaths worldwide in 2018, He Stressed.”

He noted that the highest regional incidence and mortality are in Africa, saying In Lesotho cervical cancer is the most common cancer among women and account for 44 percent of all cases of cancer in the country. He added that according to 2018 data the incident of cervical in Lesotho is 51.1 per 100 000 women population and mortality rate of 39.1.

The minister said it has been realized that HIV and cervical cancer are mostly related as women with HIV seem to have cervical cancer hence pledged government’s commitment to improve health serves at health centres and health posts as well as to ensure that village health workers are well trained so to reduce these mentioned numbers."

Ladies, let's encourage each other to regularly screen or go for pap smears. Early detection is key to a healthy life.

Lung Cancer Screening

"Screening" means testing for a disease when there are no symptoms or history of that disease. Doctors recommend a screening test to find a disease early, when treatment may work better.
The only recommended screening test for lung cancer is low-dose computed tomography (also called a low-dose CT scan, or LDCT). During an LDCT scan, you lie on a table and an X-ray machine uses a low dose (amount) of radiation to make detailed images of your lungs. The scan only takes a few minutes and is not painful."
We recommend yearly lung cancer screening with LDCT for people who—

- Have a 20 pack-year or more smoking history, and
- Smoke now or have quit within the past 15 years, and
- Are between 50 and 80 years old.

A pack-year is smoking an average of one pack of ci******es per day for one year. For example, a person could have a 20 pack-year history by smoking one pack a day for 20 years or two packs a day for 10 years.

Risks Of Screening

Lung cancer screening has at least three risks—

A lung cancer screening test can suggest that a person has lung cancer when no cancer is present. This is called a false-positive result. False-positive results can lead to follow-up tests and surgeries that are not needed and may have more risks.
A lung cancer screening test can find cases of cancer that may never have caused a problem for the patient. This is called over-diagnosis. Over-diagnosis can lead to treatment that is not needed.
Radiation from repeated LDCT tests can cause cancer in otherwise healthy people.

That is why lung cancer screening is recommended only for adults who are at high risk for developing the disease because of their smoking history and age, and who do not have a health problem that substantially limits their life expectancy or their ability or willingness to have lung surgery, if needed.

If you are thinking about getting screened, talk to your doctor or come visit us at the clinic ( TB ward) for tests at no cost to you.

The best way to reduce your risk of lung cancer is to not smoke and to avoid secondhand smoke. Lung cancer screening is not a substitute for quitting smoking.

Remember, early screening leads to early diagnosis and treatment which, ultimately does save lives.
