Today, at the start of European Biotech Week 2025 (September 29 - October 6), we celebrate 𝟓𝟎 𝐲𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐛𝐢𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐧𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐲 𝐢𝐧 𝐋𝐢𝐭𝐡𝐮𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐚 (biotechweek.org).

The opening of the first enzyme factory in Vilnius in 1971 led to the establishment of the Institute of Applied Enzymology in 1975 - a milestone that marked the true beginning of Lithuania’s biotechnology industry.

Since then, Lithuania has made remarkable progress, becoming a true life sciences hub. Today, more than 400 companies are active in the biotechnology sector, making it one of the country’s fastest-growing and most productive economic fields (source: lithuania.lt).

It’s no surprise that Lithuania is increasingly chosen as a host for international scientific events: this year, the prestigious EMBO (European Molecular Biology Organisation) Young Scientist Forum took place in Vilnius on September 24-26, highlighting Lithuania’s growing role in European science.

𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝 𝐑𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐃𝐚𝐲 – an international awareness campaign for rabies prevention, endorsed by human and veterinary health organizations in more than 100 countries, including the World Health Organization and the World Organisation for Animal Health.

World Rabies Day takes place each year on 𝐒𝐞𝐩𝐭𝐞𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫 𝟐𝟖 and is dedicated to French pharmacist and microbiologist Louis Pasteur, often called “the father of microbiology,” who developed the principles of pasteurization, fermentation, and 𝐯𝐚𝐜𝐜𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧, including the first effective vaccines against rabies virus and anthrax bacteria, saving millions of human and animal lives.
