Interesting view on MUSTARD

In summer, Mustard flowers bring cheerful colour the landscape. The sudden appearance of the bright yellow flowers mimics the sudden and apparently unexplained appearance of a deep gloom.

It may seem to have no origin or known cause. It simply appears.

Mustard seeds are widespread in the soil seed bank but they only germinate when the ground is disturbed. And this too is the pattern of the Mustard state. A disruption to our equilibrium that brings to the surface old trauma prompting a state of “unexplained” gloom.

The Second Nineteen essences all point to triggered responses. In the case of Mustard, potentially some deeply hidden past trauma.

Mustard essence reflects the energy of the bright yellow flowers allowing you to find joy in life that will dispel the gloom.

Scleranthus is a tiny plant that is easy to overlook, especially when growing amongst other plants.

In fact, finding it often means getting on your hands and knees to peer closely at the ground.

It has tiny green flowers and a low, spreading form. This closeness to the ground is a strong indication of the nature of Scleranthus types.

Many plants reach for the sun with a sense of purpose – for example Impatiens that grows at considerable speed. But not Sceleranthus, it moves across the ground in random directions as if searching without focus.

Scleranthus types become limited in their vision and lack decisiveness. Bach said that they relied purely on intellect and not at all on intuition, the voice of the soul. At times of choice, they could not hear that voice to help them decide on their path. In fact, they are prone to change their minds constantly. The lack of an inner compass keeps them from their path.

This leads to uncertainty and changing decisions. The essence brings self-determination, focus and decisiveness.

Larch has allowed me to realize that I don't need a Master's degree to be good in what I'm doing. Larch and Mimulus opened a new universe for me, the one of daring and trusting myself.🙏🩷

Do you live life with the brakes on? Hesitate? Miss opportunities? If so, you may find that Larch is the Bach Flower to try. Dr Bach included this in the group for Despondency or Despair.

Are you the type of person who let others overshadow you because of a deep sense of your own inferiority? Do others praise you but you just can't buy into it?

Do you limit yourself and stay stuck in a comfort zone belief that there's no point in trying as you won't succeed? That in fact you expect to fail? Reflect on your experiences, do you notice how this has become a self-fulfilling prophecy?

You may wonder where this lack of confidence has come from... it can be useful to consider the messages from childhood and those as an adult. Which words have you breathed in and absorbed into your being? Remind yourself that you are not obliged to carry the self-limiting beliefs of others. You have a choice.

It can be useful to create a visual image of your emotions (bubbles of words on a page is one simple way) and notice what else may be influencing or refining your lack of confidence. Is it history, habit, heartache or those around you?

Larch will help you to have confidence and faith in your ability and to know that with perseverance, success is indeed possible.

What are you experiences of Larch? 🌺

There is great diversity with Bach flowers in their structure, reproduction and rate of growth. We have spent decades exploring the form of the plants to better understand their healing messages.

Contrasting different plants is a window into the role of the essences.

If we look at speed of growth we can contrast two plants at the opposite ends of the spectrum to explore their messages.

Impatiens grows at tremendous speed. Over the space of a couple of months the early germinating seedlings will go from a few millimetres to 6 feet or more. This is a plant focused on taking action for itself and not being deeply rooted in the ground. The explosive growth will shade out other plants as Impatiens races to flower.

As the seed heads form, tension builds up until the slightest touch causes them to explode shooting seeds out far from the parent plant.

There is little sensitivity to others but a deep internal sensitivity to inner direction in this plant. The message of the pale mauve flowers that are selected to make the essence is to have a little more patience and awareness of the needs of others.

In contrast, Oaks take 100 years to reach adulthood. Growth is gradual but persistent. The focus is not only on the self but also on community. An oak’s life cycle of supporting many different species is a reflection of this.

Quercus Robur – the oak species Bach chose – will not produce acorns until about 40 years old. In abundant years (known as mast years) there will be a huge quantity of seed produced. The acorns do not explode or travel on the wind, they simply fall to the ground often creating carpets.

Their method of dispersal is also an offering to other species. Squirrels, for example, will hoard the acorns for the winter and Jays are renowned to burying the seed in scrubby patches, where those not eaten germinate and begin the long march to adulthood.

In contrast to Impatiens, Oaks are deeply rooted and connected to their community of place. There is a deep sense of service that means they soldier on in the face of all and any difficulties. The great strength of Oak often masks the need for a little more gentleness with the self which is the message of the essence.

Two very different essences for equally different personalities and the insights are written into the form of the plant itself.

Julian Barnard explores each plant in more detail in these videos – part of our extensive free library at the Bach Educational Resource.
