When teams normalize rest, care becomes culture. 🧘🏻‍♂️

Whether it’s a delayed reply, a shared pause, or a supervisor modeling time off — those moments matter. They say, “you don’t have to earn your rest.”

💬 What’s one small way your team could build more rest into the everyday?

In many care-based professions, exhaustion is worn like a badge.
But if we only stop when we break down, that’s not rest— it’s recovery. 🚨

Burnout isn’t just an individual issue. It’s often upheld by workplace cultures that celebrate overextension and stigmatize rest.
Imagine if rest was part of your job description — not a side note. 💭🧘🏻‍♂️

Whether it’s something going on in your personal life, or just your own response to changes and events in the world — there are times when someone you’re supporting is feeling something that resonates closely with your own experience.

As a humanitarian, that can be a strange place to be. You’re there to hold space for others — but what if their grief, frustration, or uncertainty mirrors something you’ve been sitting with too?

💡 This post shares a few gentle reflections for those moments. Ways to stay present and grounded, while still caring for yourself.

What’s helped you navigate situations like these before?

For those working in humanitarian roles, even holidays can feel like just another day on the job.

So this weekend, whether you’re with loved ones or alone, working or resting, we hope you find a little space to:
🥚 Check in with someone who fills your cup
🐰 Enjoy a slow morning without guilt
🌸 Let yourself laugh, nap, or disconnect
💛 Be reminded that you matter, too

Humanitarian workers often face unique stressors, including exposure to traumatic events and high-pressure environments, which lead to risks of burnout, anxiety, and depression.

If you are leading a team of humanitarian workers in high-stress environments, here's how you can support your team 🪷

- Lead by example - take breaks, set boundaries, and manage workload realistically (even in times when you might face staff shortages)
- Train staff to recognize signs of burnout and offer immediate support
- Normalize discussions around stress and mental health without stigma and encourage open conversations
- Equip your team with tools like breathwork, meditation, or reflective check-ins
- Advocate for counseling, peer support, or debriefing sessions after tough missions
- Continuously educate yourself as a leader to relate more with your team and learn the ins and outs of humanitarian work psychology

As a humanitarian, working in challenging field conditions is a profound emotional journey.

Remember, the stress you experience is not a sign of weakness, but your body's incredible survival mechanism.

After a long, tough day - give yourself permission to decompress: enjoy a comfort meal, talk to a loved one, take a long shower, listen to music, or simply breathe. Your mental health is just as important as the critical work you do in supporting communities around the world.
