Luxembourg Horse & Rider Chiropractic

Luxembourg Horse & Rider Chiropractic Scott Oliver offers chiropractic care for you & your horse for optimal performance. Treating both is important as one will compensate for the other.

Chiropractic is a vital component to equine performance. My aim is optimize the relationship between biomechanics and neurology for both the horse and rider. This is a missing link in equine sport since a problem in the rider must be compensated for by the horse and visa versa. Therefore, on visiting the stable, I also bring along my portable table for treating the rider.

Let’s talk neurological symptoms.

Often times horse owners are terrified to hear their horse is exhibiting neurological symptoms. This is usually because for horse owners they immediately think of something potentially deadly (EPM for example). But that is not always the case! In fact, there are a variety of causes and not all of them are as serious as you would think!

Neurological symptoms in horses can range from mild to severe. Symptoms include pain, lameness, pins and needles sensation, muscle weakness, muscle atrophy, dragging limbs, head tilt, loss of proprioception (brain knowing where the body is in space), and ataxia (lack of coordination).

A common cause of neurological symptoms is a restriction in the spine. A restriction refers to a joint that has lost its motion. This can interfere with the communication between the brain and body which affects the the nerves throughout the whole body! This is why we can have an issue in the spine, but have the symptoms show up somewhere else in the body, such as the limbs or GI. Chiropractic adjustments remove the restriction and restore proper communication between the brain and the body. Consistent chiropractic care ensures the nervous system is functioning at its best.

Thoughts Are Things

Thoughts are not abstract, they are finite in their expression and come to life through our physiology. Thoughts are real and the process of thinking them is as tangible as a fever, blood pressure, and pain.

The emergence of the expression of a thought of any kind summates within a very intricate symphony of biological processes and mechanisms. We do not have the exact process and order of the reactions and steps our cellular and systemic exchanges go through to produce a thought, like if the thought stimulates the biochemical changes that follow or the biochemical stimulate what becomes a thought, we do know that these details and progressions of sub-cellular on-goings in the earliest formation of a single thought are truly dynamic and do not originate from one region of the brain or body. We leverage an incalculable amount of information and cross reactions to bring these things we call thoughts to life.

Who cares?

What this means is that the level of function in your body and cells, and the health of the sub-cellular mechanisms that support life, can influence the quantity, quality and tone of every thought we have.

Ever find yourself thinking more negative thoughts when tired? Or brainstorming more when energized or happy? Ever find yourself spiraling in negative thoughts and emotions after drinking alcohol? Or maybe after eating a whole lot of junk food? Ever notice that negative thoughts seem to call in their friends and build on you when you are feeling down? Ever feel happy and optimistic or social after a having a drink and the ideas just flow?

These are all examples of how our physiology can effect, and at times, drive our thoughts.

Again, so what?

This means that by working on our physiology, by focusing on keeping our cells healthy, by being aware of how our lifestyle choices of diet, exercise and stress, can effect, influence and possibly even cause certain thoughts to be, grow, or linger.

I am all for working on how I think and feel. I meditate, do breathing work, affirmations, and try and stay positive, but I also work hard on my chemical, toxic exposure, the quality and timing of my food intake, how I move and physically exert my body and actively stimulate my mind.

In a time of growing anxiety, depression and mental distress, I believe we must try everything we can to stay ahead of these issues, prevent them and strive for the optimal environment and lifestyle to prevent them as we focus on developing optimal health, healing, aging and quality of life for ourselves and our children.

In the meantime my friends, the mind and body, the mental health and physical health of our body and life are not separate and they both play off each other and contribute to every function and element of our health and life, do not underestimate either side of this coin.

Few are familiar with the term salutogenesis, yet it expresses the very essence of wellness. Antonovsky1 coined the term in 1979. It is derived from salus, which is Latin for health, and genesis, meaning to give birth. As Cowley and Billings wrote: "Salutogenesis literally means 'that which gives birth to health.' In traditional public health and community medicine approaches, a 'pathogenic' perspective, in which the focus is on disease or illness and its prevention or treatment, most often dominates interventions. Adoption of a salutogenic perspective highlights the importance of starting from a consideration of how health is created and maintained."2 Salutogenesis is the opposite of pathogenesis. Pathos means suffering; pathogenesis is the birth of suffering. Ironically, most health professions have this term incorporated in their names. For example, conventional medicine is known as allopathy. Even alternative medical systems, such as homeopathy, naturopathy, naprapathy and osteopathy, incorporate pathos in their names, and a focus on disease prevention or treatment is implicit in their clinical strategies. In contrast, salutogenesis is the creation of health and well-being. While the prevention and treatment of disease has its place, it is a dangerously incomplete approach for inculcating and cultivating human potential. The salutogenic model addresses the causes of global well-being rather than the origins of specific disease processes. It focuses on strategies and lifestyle choices that empower individuals to experience the full spectrum of the human experience.
