A 15‑year‑old Chicago teen named Vincent Gonzalez had repeatedly tried sneaking into the basketball court at XSport Fitness in Skokie during summer, despite his membership having lapsed after his family couldn’t afford the fees. Staff warned him multiple times, and when he was finally caught again, the gym called the police for trespassing. Officer Mario Valenti responded to the call and instead of arresting him, he learned Vincent just wanted to play basketball. Seeing that the teen’s family couldn’t afford a renewed membership, Valenti offered to pay $150 of his own money to get him a few months of access.
Valenti’s gesture inspired the gym’s corporate office to go above and beyond: they applied his payment toward a full two‑year membership valued at $718 and covered the rest of the cost themselves. Vincent, who had been recognized as a promising basketball player, later said he texted Valenti to thank him, sharing that the act changed his perception of law enforcement. The officer reflected that after two decades on the job, he’d rather see a kid on the court than on the street, and the Skokie Police Department noted that stories like this, though rare in the headlines, reflect the everyday compassion officers bring to their work
