HCA Florida Ocala Hospital and HCA Florida West Marion Hospital are celebrating a successful first year of a three-year grant program by congratulating hundreds of local high school students for learning more about healthcare, including pursuing potential careers in the field.

HCA Healthcare Foundation, through its Healthier Tomorrow Fund, announced a $1 million grant last year to the Consortium of Florida Education Foundations to help fund its Career Pathways to a Healthier Florida program. The Public Education Foundation of Marion County (PEFMC) received $60,000 from the grant to support students in Belleview High School, Lake Weir High School, North Marion High School, and West Port High School.

In Marion County, the grant supports opportunities for students enrolled in the HOSA-Future Health Professionals (HOSA) program at their respective schools. During the program’s first year, participating students learned about anatomy, medical terminology, and healthcare ethics, and received specialized training in occupations such as nursing, certified nursing assistant, certified medical assistant, and patient care technician.

Through HCA Healthcare Foundation’s grant, Rhiana Goode, a 2025 graduate of West Port High School in Ocala, obtained her Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) credential and completed CPR and Stop the Bleed® training. Goode said having completed CNA training helped her get her current job at a chiropractor’s office in Ocala. She plans to start nursing school at the College of Central Florida in Ocala in January.

“I was always interested in anything in the medical field from a young age. A lot of my family do stuff in the medical field. But I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do. I was open-minded,” Goode said. “The program gave me an opportunity to go out and see if this is something that I would actually like to do, and it helped me realize that healthcare is something I want to do for the rest of my life. The program helped me get my job because they saw that I had some experience and certification. It’s really easy to get a job now with that CNA certification alone.”

Laniyah Baker, Abigail Haigh, and Gracie Phillips, all seniors at North Marion High School, say they seek to pursue careers in healthcare after graduation, based partly on instruction provided by the HCA Healthcare Foundation grant.

“The best part of this program has been the volunteering and shadowing. It definitely gives me the first (person) point of view so I can see for myself what people do on a daily basis instead of reading it in books. That helps me a lot,” said Baker, who plans to become a registered nurse and seek a bachelor’s degree in nursing. “I definitely encourage my other friends to join. It has taught me plenty of leadership skills.”

“I want to help other people, and this program has really encouraged me in wanting to be there when they are really sick,” said Haigh, who wants to become a nurse to follow in her mother’s footsteps. “This program has shown me different ways to help people and taught me a lot experience-wise. It’s very rewarding and it’s just a great experience.”

“I’ve always wanted to do nursing or at least some type of healthcare profession and this program has really helped me gear my life toward that,” said Phillips. “This program shows how much work goes into being a healthcare professional. It can give people a bunch of experiences and new information” about working in healthcare.

So far in Marion County:

• 230 Certified Nursing Assistant students have earned CPR certifications.
• 84 students participated in job shadowing at HCA Florida Ocala Hospital.
• 640 students completed Stop the Bleed training.

“HCA Florida Ocala Hospital is honored to help strengthen our future healthcare workforce in partnership with the Public Education Foundation of Marion County and Marion County Public Schools, providing high school students real-world experience that can lead to rewarding careers,” said Alan Keesee, chief executive officer of HCA Florida Ocala Hospital. “We’re really excited to see this program continue to grow and provide more students with opportunities to learn new skills that will benefit them throughout their lives.”

“When this partnership with HCA Healthcare Foundation and our local HCA Florida Healthcare hospitals was announced, we saw their investment as an opportunity to better equip students for careers in healthcare and to meet the increasing demand for a skilled healthcare workforce in our community,” said Meghan Magamoll, executive director of the Public Education Foundation of Marion County. “The initial results show that this initiative is paying dividends for students, our local healthcare industry, and our community. We look forward to its continued success.”

The PEFMC is among 15 local education foundations in Florida that received grants from HCA Healthcare’s Healthier Tomorrow Fund and are participating in the initiative. Across the state, the initiative has already exceeded its goals in the first year, including:

• 42% increase across all 15 programs.
• 1,767 certifications earned by students statewide.
• 100% of surveyed students reported increased interest in healthcare careers.

HCA Florida Ocala Hospital and HCA Florida West Marion Hospital have been long-time partners of the PEFMC in supporting local students.

HCA Florida Ocala Hospital sponsors the HCA Jumpstart to Healthcare Scholarship for seven high school seniors; the Take Stock in Children program; scholarships for the HOSA national conference; West Port High School’s school business partnership; College Park Elementary, a Community Partnership School with United Way of Marion County; the Mission Bus Brigade School Supply Drive sponsored by the Marion County Public Schools Homeless/Needy Children Program; and Thank a Teacher award, which celebrates outstanding teachers in Marion County.

Dr. Luis Cadena, an equine veterinarian, recounts his journey from debilitating back pain to recovery after minimally invasive spine surgery at HCA Florida Ocala Hospital. His lifelong passion for horses was increasingly overshadowed by excruciating back pain. For years, he lived with a constant ache that he managed with shots and rehab, but the pain finally overwhelmed him while working with a horse, leaving him unable to stand.

An MRI revealed that his vertebrae were failing. At HCA Florida Ocala Hospital, neurological surgeon Dr. Main performed a minimally invasive spine surgery, a procedure that offers smaller incisions, less pain, and faster recovery. Immediately following the procedure, Dr. Cadena experienced a profound relief, waking up for the first time in 10 years completely pain-free.

Dr. Main explains that the minimally invasive approach allows surgeons to precisely target problem areas while minimizing impact on surrounding healthy tissue. This specialized care is designed to help patients regain their quality of life. Today Dr. Cadena is finally free from pain, happily working with horses once more and reflecting on how HCA Florida Ocala Hospital helped him get his life back.

Heart conditions don’t always begin in childhood — and they don’t always make themselves known early.

Congenital heart defects (CHDs) can remain hidden well into adulthood, only surfacing later in life. That’s why, especially for older adults, staying proactive with regular checkups and specialized care is essential to catching silent heart issues before they become serious.

At HCA Florida Healthcare, part of the broader HCA Healthcare network, we’re committed to delivering comprehensive heart, lung, and vascular services — right here in your community. In 2024 alone, HCA Healthcare's Congenital Heart Programs performed over 700 CHD surgeries, helping patients of all ages live healthier, fuller lives.

Each year our hospitals support the Healthier Tomorrows Food Drive, partnering with local food banks to put nutritious meals on tables that need them. Through generous giving of colleagues, HCA Florida Ocala Hospital and HCA Florida West Marion Hospital collected more than 700 pounds of food, providing 597 meals to children and families at College Park Elementary, a United Way Community Partnership School, a local effort that ensures children have reliable meals outside of school.

Those donations were transformed into a 'Give S'more Back' food structure, symbolizing the gathering of a community around a campfire, the same way our teams band together to provide exceptional care to those who need it. Together, we continue to strengthen the community we proudly call home.

🏈Derrel Kelley spent his entire life playing football with one dream: to play in the NFL. While the 23-year-old athlete was training for tryouts this spring he suffered a stroke. His mom found him collapsed on the floor, unable to move or speak.

Paramedics brought Derrel to HCA Florida Northside Hospital, the first comprehensive stroke center in Pinellas County and nationally recognized for lifesaving care for stroke patients.

Derrel is now encouraging others to know the signs and symptoms of stroke at any age. We are proud to have seven hospitals named among the top 10% in the nation for stroke treatment in 2023, with three in the top 5%. "Patients can receive life-saving cardiac care right here in their own community," said Dr. Sailendra Upendram, interventional cardiologist with HCA Florida Healthcare.

When longtime coach and community volunteer Jeremy Martin suffered a sudden widowmaker heart attack while alone at his hurricane-damaged home, he chose to trust the same expert team his community has relied on for years. That decision saved his life.

As soon as Jeremy arrived at HCA Florida Englewood Hospital, the cardiac catheterization lab team was ready. Within minutes, they identified a 100% blockage of the LAD artery — a type of heart attack that is often fatal without immediate intervention. Dr. Upendram and his team quickly placed stents to restore blood flow.

“The professionalism was like no other,” Jeremy shared. His wife, Joey, expressed deep gratitude for the compassion shown to her in the middle of crisis. "The nurse came out several times to reassure me. I felt he was in great hands because of the team there."

Today, Jeremy has made a full recovery. He continues to coach, serve, and impact the community he loves.

His story is a powerful reminder: heart attacks can strike without warning, and every second matters. Take charge of your heart health. Learn more about cardiology services, find a heart care expert, and complete a free heart risk assessment with HCA Florida Healthcare: https://bit.ly/3KmnIXq.

No matter what you’ve got cooking this , remember to prioritize safety. In crowded kitchens and around deep fryers, accidents can happen fast. Each year around Thanksgiving, there’s an increase in cooking-related burn injuries, and unattended cooking is the primary cause, according to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). Follow these tips for what to avoid if you or someone else needs .

If you suffer a mild or first-degree burn, the affected area may swell or turn red. You can treat these burns at home with simple first aid steps:

🧼Clean the area with soap and cool water.
🧴Apply a thin layer of ointment.
🩹Dress the wound with sterile non-stick gauze.
💊Take over-the-counter medication to manage pain.

For more serious burns, immediate medical attention is critical. You can always find help fast at your local emergency room – but for complex cases, specialized care is available through our broader HCA Healthcare network, home to 11 American Burn Association-recognized burn centers across nine states.

Today is National Injury Prevention Day, a moment dedicated to promoting safety and raising awareness about injury prevention.

About 62 million Americans—or roughly one of every five people—seek medical care for an injury each year, according to the National Safety Council. The council further notes that preventable injuries are the leading cause of death for Americans age 44 and younger, and that the death rate from preventable injuries is a staggering 95% higher than it was in 1992. Meanwhile, for nonfatal injuries, falls and car crashes are primary drivers of visits to local ERs.

Remember that injuries are not accidents, and many of them can be prevented by being aware of the conditions around you, adopting safe practices, and following established safety protocols, among other steps.

If you are injured, however, know that HCA Florida Healthcare is nearby to take care of you with teams of dedicated, capable, and compassionate caregivers. We operate seven emergency rooms in the Ocala area as well as the region's only Level I trauma center—all of which are open every day, all day long, and feature high quality care and cutting-edge technology.

They include:

All around Ocala/Marion County are signs that Christmas is approaching. We at HCA Florida Ocala Hospital and HCA Florida West Marion Hospital encourage residents to be careful as they prepare for December's festivities.

On average, the HCA Florida Ocala Hospital trauma center, this region's only Level 1 trauma center, treats about 5,000 patients a year. Falls are the leading cause of those visits, causing 59% of our trauma cases.

We note that because the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission reports that during the 2023 holiday season, the most recent for which data is available, roughly 15,000 people, or about 160 people a day, were treated in hospital emergency rooms across the nation due to "holiday decorating-related" injuries. Falls from ladders were responsible for about 50% of those incidents.

Play it safe this holiday season when putting up those holiday lights or hanging other decorations. Heed these tips from the American College of Emergency Physicians:

• Be mindful of the weather and slippery surfaces. If anyone must go on the roof, make sure they understand ladder safety tips before climbing.
• Inspect the ladder for damage before use, make sure it is planted on firm and level ground, and have another person hold it in place while anyone is climbing. The “buddy system” can be a lifesaver if anything goes wrong.
• If alcohol is part of the holiday celebration, save the drinks until after the decorating is done.

To understand more about the potential risks of falling from a ladder, watch our video featuring "Santa Scott" Jacob. Scott became a patient in the HCA Florida Ocala Hospital trauma center after a fall, but thanks to the high quality treatment he received, he's back to spreading holiday cheer.

HCA Florida Ocala Hospital administrators, physicians, and colleagues on Nov. 13 celebrated recently achieving Bronze Level Certification in Orrum Clinical Analytics prestigious Center of Excellence program. The milestone pertains to the perfusion industry and that recognizes the hospital's commitment to high quality patient care standards, rigorous patient safety protocols, and excellence in the operating room.

Perfusion is the process of circulating oxygen-rich blood to organs throughout the body when the heart is temporarily stopped, such as during open-heart surgery. This is done with a mechanical pump that simulates the function of the patient’s heart and lungs.

HCA Florida Ocala Hospital is the first hospital in Marion County to earn Orrum's Center of Excellence Bronze Level Certification.

Joining the celebration was former HCA Florida Ocala Hospital patient Vincent Delima. Vincent underwent perfusion after suffering near-fatal heart failure, during which he spent 35 days in an induced coma to receive extracorporeal membrane oxygenation, or ECMO, treatment, Vincent shared that he is fully recovered and felt blessed to have received the perfusion treatment and care at HCA Florida Ocala Hospital.

“Patient safety is paramount for us at HCA Florida Ocala Hospital and HCA Florida West Marion Hospital. This recognition as a Center of Excellence by Orrum, a national leader in evaluating hospital safety protocols, underscores our commitment to upholding the highest standards for safety and quality for our patients who need cardiovascular surgery," said Alan Keesee, chief executive officer of HCA Florida Ocala Hospital. “I am proud of our team for their dedication and hard work in achieving this level of excellence for perfusion procedures, and we look forward to continuing this journey and raising the bar for patient care for our community.”

HCA Florida Ocala Hospital, HCA Florida West Marion Hospital, and the HCA Florida Ocala Imaging Center are proud to spotlight our dedicated colleagues who help heal by looking where the naked eye cannot see.

National Radiology Technician Week—or Rad Tech Week—celebrates those healthcare workers who specialize in medical imaging. The week commemorates the anniversary of German physicist Wilhelm Conrad Roentgen's discovery of the X-ray in November 1895.

Whether by X-ray, ultrasound, or more advanced technology, most patients who enter HCA Florida Ocala Hospital and HCA West Marion Hospital receive some kind of imaging service from our teams. Consequently, our Rad Techs are often the first ones to see what is ailing our patients, and their work helps our physicians to diagnose and treat our patients' conditions with greater accuracy, efficiency, and confidence.

As healthcare evolves, reliance on the diagnostic tools used by our Rad Techs will only increase, especially as imaging is enhanced by 3-D technology, artificial intelligence, or mobility. And our hospitals have invested accordingly to provide patients a better experience in our facilities.

During 2025, for instance, HCA Florida Ocala Hospital added a second MRI machine and became only the second hospital in the state of Florida to own and operate a mobile CT scanner. HCA Florida West Marion Hospital, meanwhile, has acquired a next-generation CT unit that will soon be operational and obtained a new mobile fluoroscopic imaging machine that can be used inside the operating room.

Thank you, Rad Techs, for your radical devotion to helping our patients receive better care.
