Our Projects

At the moment our lab is carrying out 3 different cutting-edge innovative projects regarding RNA EVs content and their applications in cancer diagnostics. Such as:

1) PROSCANEXO: Exploitation of extracellular vesicles for precision diagnostics of prostate cancer in collaboration with Consorcio Centro de Investigación Biomédica en Red, M.P. (Spain) , Erasmus Medical Center(The Netherlands), Oslo University Hospital & The Norwegian Radium Hospital (Norway) and University of Tartu (Estonia) funded by the European Cancer Coalition (TRANSCAN-2).

2) Prostate cancer-derived extracellular vesicles as liquid biopsies and therapeutic targets in collaboration with Rīga East University Hospital(Latvia) and funded by Latvijas Zinātnes padomes.

3) Clinical utility of extracellular vesicle-enclosed human and microbial transcriptomes in collaboration with Rīga East Hospital & SIA GenEra (Latvia) and funded by the European Regional Development fund. Check out our publications for specific details of each project and updates!

Our Projects: "Clinical utility of extracellular vesicle-enclosed human and microbial transcriptomes" funded by the European Regional Development Fund and in collaboration with Riga East Hospital and SIA "GenEra".

In one of our previous studies, we discovered the presence of microbial RNA fragments inside EVs isolated from different human biofluids. Thus, sparked our curiosity and we decided to dig deeper in the topic.

The main aim of this project is to gain new knowledge about the composition and origin of RNA cargo of EVs circulating in cancer patients’ blood, and to assess the clinical utility of EV-enclosed human and microbial RNAs for the diagnosis, prognosis and tracking disease progression in three distinct types of cancer – prostate, breast and gastric cancer.

Have you ever wonder how would it be to see the inside of a cell in 3D? And how the EVs are released from an inside perspective? Then, do not miss out the following video!

Our projects: PROSCANEXO 🇱🇻🇪🇸🇪🇪🇳🇴🇳🇱
A project aiming to develop a novel, ultrasensitive lateral flow assay for the detection of EVs in human urine that would enable simple, fast and robust point-of-care diagnosis of prostate cancer. The project is carried out in collaboration with the CIBER (Spain), Erasmus Medical Center (The Netherlands); Oslo University Hospital & Norwegian Radium hospital (Norway) & The University of Tartu (Estonia).

Our main tasks have been:
1) Selecting & optimizing the best extraction method for urinary EVs.

2) Testing RNA biomarkers by qRT-PCR in a set of patients and controls.

3) Establishing ddPCR assays for the absolute quantification of the most relevant RNA biomarkers

4) Primary validation of RNA markers and final assay conditions to be tested.

Soon we will be ready to show some interesting results!Keep posted!
