UV rays, pollution, poor diet, smoking, are all factors that lead to accelerated ageing. The aging process induces alterations in the structure and function of our body, including the immune system. These alterations affect both the immediate (innate) immune system and the immune system that activates a specific response (acquired). The term inflammaging refers to immunosenescence and contributes to an increased likelihood of infection or autoimmune disease. The term is derived from the contraction of the word 'inflammation' and 'age'. Inflammaging is the result of chronic activation of immune cells to a continuous antigenic load. With the depletion of the immune system, the body produces cytokines, and this concentration sustains inflammaging.
