Products

Shield48 has designed an open-source model for the production of face shields. Today the team is aiming to build a decentralized network of partners who could provide crucial personal protective equipment for those who are in need. Currently, Shield48 network operates in Baltics but we are working on an easy, ready-to-print solution to be printed and assembled everywhere.

Our Story

Sadarbībā ar Latvijas ārstiem mēs izstrādājām sejas vairogus un piegādājam tos Latvijas slimnīcām

On 17-19 of March, HackForce hackathon was launched to tackle the COVID-19 crisis that has struck Europe unexpectedly. Didzis Dejus, Jānis Jātnieks, Renārs Leveika, Einārs Edziņš, Sofija Jakobsone, Maruta Skudra-Rumba, Elvīra Krēķe, Fricis Pirtnieks and PSKUS doctor Armands Buļs, mentor Mikk Mihkel Vaabel together with many others jumped aboard to solve problems in the supply chain of Personal Protective Equipment.

The team was greatly inspired by certain enterprises in the world who had managed in times of crisis to produce various medical supplies, which were in shortage. By understanding the importance and urgency of the problem, the team got to work. The team virtually came together and by holding a discussion with Paula Stradiņa Klīniskā universitāte (PSKUS) specialists, so the very first prototypes were made for testing. On the second day of the hackathon, the team presented its prototypes to Latvia’s leading epidemiologists led by Uga Dumpis. As a result – 1 out of 9 prototypes was accepted for further development. The shield is not designed as a mask but is to be used additionally to already existing face masks and other protective gear, such as glasses, to ensure greater protection.

During the next hours, the team worked on the improvement of technical production of the shields. Many cooperations were created during this period of time where people and organisations with available CNC and laser technologies agreed to join and help in the production process. The technologies are located in cities where the biggest hospitals are located in Latvia – Liepāja, Ventspils, Rīga, Rēzekne, which makes the face shields more accessible to the regional hospitals, as well as ensure the convenience of the distribution of shields.
